What is Malfunct?

Malfunct is an audio process that seeks the machine in human and human in the machine. Bootstrapped in the beginning of 21st century when it came to our attention that new sounds would be needed to define the transhuman.

Malfunct! Defunct! That's what we are!

Malfunction is the basic capability of every organism.

More malfunction is available at vampirefreaks and soundclick .

Free Stuff!

Do you know about dark funk? Here is a dark funk remix of NIN's Only. While following the original song structure, this remix adds quite a bit to the song! We like the additions so much, we are going to turn it into a cover, by getting rid of original samples.

We used to be totally industrial metal. Download Storm:Override .

Amplitude is the march of the transhuman. Here is Amplitude (Existential Surrealist Mix) , a great mix by the noise artist Existential Surrealist. I t is not known if he is still making music, but this mix plays very well on club sound systems indeed!

Download quintessential Malfunct, this Sickness is going to save us. Also available is an uber-cool reproduction of the piece. Download Sickness (Dub Beton Mix by Staatsfeind) . Staatsfeind is also the designer of our cool logo.

Electrothrash is here. Check out Sanitarium . In addition, it is presented in instrumental form as a preview of the fat electrothrash sound we have recently designed here .This is a work in progress and it is sure to rock your ass when it is done!

More about Malfunct

Malfunct has evolved from an industrial metal project to a progressive electronic project which seeks to blend together some of the coolest styles in modern industrial/ebm. To reflect upon this venture in an amusing way, we have conceived of some idiosyncratic subgenre names for our music. Electro Thrash contains the energy of 80's thrash metal such as Metallica and Megadeth while banging on distorted synths with the backing of electronic percussion as the vocals deliver the might of metal. It is industrial metal without the guitars. Dark Funk takes industrial to its roots with funky bass lines and all around fun with cynical lyrics based on a dark yet FUNKEY electro sound. We have also interpreted Unter Null's style of trance-like hellektro to be "helltrance" while kidding around on side-line forums. Some other underground artists like AlphaQuadrant and Tourian have presented interesting pieces on this concept as well as Malfunct's "Helltrance in A minor". Helltrance is around 140bpm or faster and it is similar to dark psy-trance, but has more of the industrial/goth elements. Kind of like a grimmer version of Juno Reactor, if such a thing is possible. The basic idea is to write the trance piece that demons will enjoy, without the hellektro cheese. Previously, we have also written many pieces in a very old school style, defying conventions of pop music, but many people have mistaken it for poor production, some of which are available for download above. Therefore, we have also invented Preset Electro which many other bands seem to be doing, it involves working with synthesizer presets. Jokes aside, Malfunct is an ever evolving musical project, and promises you to always challenge your taste in sound!

A bit of history

Malfunct was founded with the name Malfunction in year 2000 by Eray Ozkural, Arda Tipi and Murat Uney. We experimented with a lot of styles from industrial metal to EBM, and as far as we know we are the first band in Turkey to give serious attention to EBM, strange as it sounds. In preceding years, Eray worked on experiments in computer music while Arda perfected a progressive guitar style and Murat was the master of thrashing riffs and sound manipulations on the guitar. Two productive years in 2000 and 2001 gave birth to the initial but decisive sound of the band. Following a hiatus in 2002 due to relocations and other difficulties, Eray continued producing and composing on his own, towards the sound of malfunction, renaming the project as Malfunct since there was an old metal band with the name Malfunction. Some results of this work are available on this site. A 1 hour long demo CD called "Promo Machine" that contains 17 tracks was distributed to selected people which contained pieces from a wide variety of styles including old school industrial, EBM, industrial metal, electro metal, IDM, etc. in 2005, most of which were instrumental. This is the era after Promo Machine and it features a more "professional" sound, i.e. sounds just like other bands! However, the tracks "Cypherpunk Alliance" and "Sleep" are from the Promo Machine CD, and they feature the more original and less pro. sound of Malfunct.

Sounds Like: New school industrial/EBM with industrial metal and coldwave influences. Bastard child of NIN and Fear Factory? I don't know. We don't sound like anything else, really, but the influences do show up. What we don't sound like: we're not a bad imitation of any other band. This is fucking original!
