About Me

I'm not nearly as eclectic as I'd like to be/as I'd like you to think I am. I can balance an open mind with a sincere conviction. I hold the door for anybody, not just "hot chicks." I can fix your computer, but I can't do jack about your car. I can tune your guitar, but I can't make dinner. I can hold my own at the Kevin Bacon game, but I don't know what an RBI is. I can really enjoy watching sports, but I can't follow a team.
I think dichotomies are stupid. So are short, choppy sentences.
Paradoxes, if you ask me, are cool, but not really.
I'm a very serious Christian, but I'm not a fundamentalist. I'm not going to try to sell you my religion. I am one of the worship leaders at my church, but I can't listen to Christian radio.
I wish I was an activist, but in all honesty I hardly even know what's going on in the world.
I'm just smart enough to know that I'm not coming close to living up to my potential.
I'm known for even-keeled upbeatedness. Yes, I realize that's not a word.
I need to read more books.
I want to be able to play 32 musical instruments well. Right now I can fake it on a few. Check out my efforts .
I intentionally drop change in parking lots so that people can find it.

My Interests

Guitar, mandolin, banjo, piano, keyboards, drums, computers, movies, writing, technology, digital art, modern art, surrealist art, Ireland, Irish culture, traveling, literature, stuff, things . . . Hear me sing/play

I'd like to meet:

Cool people: to see concerts and movies with, to play music with, to get me to read stuff I haven't heard of, to argue philosophy with until the pragmatists in the group put us in our places.

Christians: who fit the category above . . . where are you?

And, perhaps most of all:

Music:

I hate trying to write this list: TOM WAITS, Paul Simon, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Postal Service, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Bob Wills, Sufjan Stevens, DC Talk, Phil Keaggy, Caedmon's Call, Delirious, Dr. Dre, Beastie Boys, old Snoop but not new, Weezer, Third Day, Bob Dylan, U2, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, David Wilcox, Cake, Nickel Creek . . . this is too hard.I like just about anything. I value musicianship. If I can see the craft-work, the genre doesn't matter.

Movies:

This is just as hard as the music list.Amelie is up there. Bottle Rocket/Royal Tennenbaums. Yeah, so basically Wes Anderson movies. Woody Allen movies. Coen Brothers movies. Tim Burton movies. The Princess Bride. High Fidelity. I could go on and on.Again, I like all kinds.

Television:

Don't really watch it much. When I do it's pretty much Good Eats (Alton Brown rules), Comedy Central, or a music network.

Books:

Man, this is hard.Favorites: On the Road, Catcher in the Rye, Hamlet, 1984, and several more I'm sure I'll kick myself for not having thought of.The Princess Bride is the only book/movie argument I can't resolve ("Which is better, the book or movie?" - the correct answer is almost ALWAYS "book.")Recent: Blue Like Jazz, Slaughterhouse Five, A Brief History of Time, The Hitch-hiker's Guide (all 5), The Elegant Universe, and more.

Heroes:

Ewan MacGregor. That's saying a lot, too, because he's a Scot. Rich Mullins. Steve Jobs. Bono. St. Augustine. Guy Clark. Douglas Adams. Philip K. Dick. Tom Waits. Spider-man. And, of course:
