Lock us in a cage with 500 old jazz and soul records, an MPC, my trustworthy sm58, two technics and an ashtray and you’ll see why we love Hip Hop. I could eat nothing but kicks and snares for breakfast, a punchline at lunchtime and I’d still get fatter.What we did here was to storm the music library of the local school of jazz, go home with four armfuls of records, chop ‘em, place ‘em, snip out those hihats and cymbals and whatnot, drop the beat on a headphone, write and spit. Because when it comes down to the basics, what you do is easy. The real challenge lies in picking your spots. Aptly placed, everything goes.
