From the benchmark early singles such as ‘Come Down’ and ‘I Hate Models’ and the mini-LP ‘Change/Return/Success’, Neils Children have always been somewhat ahead of the pack during their 8 year existence. With their early sound of English psychedelic punk causing waves among the UK underground , they looked to take over the indie scene at one point, “We must have been one of the first bands to fuse Syd Barrett freakouts and Gang Of Four spikiness over the last 10 years“ says singer John Linger “and we could have stuck with it...†but Neils Children never stay in one place too long.
Losing original bass player James Hair after their 2005 single ‘Always The Same’, the band found the perfect replacement in one time Hope Of The States bass player Keith Seymour. Rather than rest on their laurels, they decided to change and develop their sound to include new influences such as Orange Juice, Josef K, The Monochrome Set and The Idle Race. “It seemed strange to us that we were missing the fact that most of our influences were highly melodic, whether obviously melodic or not. We just went back and listened to what made those bands great, which was the combination of experimentation and melodies†says bass player Keith. These influences combined to produced the singles ‘Another Day’ and ‘You Didn’t Care’, and the now legendary unreleased LP ‘Pop: Aural’.
Finding like minded contemporaries, the band have played many key shows over the last year, including a support tour with old friends The Horrors and new friends The Klaxons although the hottest show of 2008 must have been the 100 Club show in February, which included the must-see line up of Hatcham Social, Electricity In Our Homes and Neils Children.
Neils Children are set to release 2 excellent singles, ‘Im Ill’ on UK indie label Waks Records and ‘Reflective/Surface’ on cool French clothing label April 77’s offshoot, April 77 Records. Both singles show the bands new melodic and edgy sound and point the way to the eagerly awaited debut full-length LP which will be released in 2008.
“The new LP will be amazing! It’s a shame that Pop: Aural remains unreleased, but trust us…the new LP will blow anything we’ve ever done out of the water†wise words from drummer Brandon Jacobs.
Lets trust them. I for one do.
