Artist, Musicians, creative and talented people with something to give to the world.
Brutalize me with music.
Thievery Corporation - Two DC DJ’s that mix electronica, rap beats, downtempo, middle eastern singing, with a druggie psychedelic sound that lingers in your mind long after the sound has left your ears.
Sublime - “40oz. To Freedom†& “Robbin’ in the Hood†showed the band could go from punk rock to reggae to rap to acoustic, while always remaining true to their own distinctive sound
Radiohead – Music with depth and emotion, builds and releases. They consistently push the boundaries of what can be done artistically within the genre.
The Doors - Deep and soulful psychedelic rock with more hits than misses. Dark and moody, but incredibly catchy.
Common – I just picked up “Be†and it is a really solid CD. It’s got Kayne West beats that will get your head bobbin’, great samples and strong, steady raps that are about more than just guns, ho’s and rims.
Cake - Simple catchy tunes with a well executed trumpet
Moby - Beautiful ambient music for drawing, writing or sitting on a train watching the colorful countryside fly by.
The Beatles – (after about 1967) Drugs and the changing times brought about the best in the Beatles. They had silly songs, weird songs and a lot of songs that were really just damn good.
“That’s chapter one. Would you like to have chapter two? You better, I know the way.â€
RJD2 – Moody electronic hip-hop that is just as strong instrumentally as it is with rappers over it.
Fela Kuti – The endless groove of this Nigeria fellow will suck you in. Politically charged lyrics over rhythmic drums and horns will have you moving to 13 minute long songs, and upset when the music finally stops
Tool – Creative hard rock that actually rocks. They also know when to slow down and just let the music breathe.
Quantic – Funky electronica with soulful singers
Portishead – Slow, sexy & entrancing. I can’t believe “Dummy†has been out for over a decade and I just found out how great it is.
Ensemble Nipponia – kinda like the soundtrack to a really beautiful Japanese movie
Gnarls Barkley – catchy pop song, with beats by DangerMouse and soaring lyrics by Cee-Lo
The Roots – great beats, strong rappers with distinct voices and styles
If in the LA area after sundown, I highly recommend KCRW 89.9. Programs like Nocturna, Metropolis & Chocolate City expose new artists while remaining true to their eclectic/independent roots. It is also streaming ...
Robert Rodriguez flicks (The El Mariachi Trilogy, Spy Kids, From Dusk till Dawn) have a great sense of action and an overwhelming sense of cool about them.
Chris Nolan’s Memento put an interesting narrative twist on a basic revenge plot.
Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom) has a great visual style and highly theatrical sensibilities.
Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) writes the most creative and original stories Hollywood has seen in years.
Killed my TV.
Imagine your life without the distraction of television.
On The Road – I defy you to read this without longing for the freedom of the open road.
1984 – Orwell was only off by a few years.
America (The Book) – Political satire in the vein of Michael Moore, but funnier, not as caustic, and with more pictures.
Box Office Poison – A well written graphic novel about relationships, dead end jobs, comic books and movies.
Rebel Without A Crew - The definitive how to of independent movie making.
Yet strangely enough, I spend most of my reading time on wikipedia.org
