About Me

Welcome to KU!
We are glad you are interested in learning more about the university. We appreciate the opportunity to tell you a little bit about who we are, what we do and why we feel so passionately about this special place. Enjoy the tour!
A distinctive place
This major educational and research institution has 29,000 students and 2,100 faculty members. It comprises the campus in Lawrence; the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; a School of Medicine clinical campus in Wichita; and educational and research facilities throughout Kansas.
Rich history
Founded before the end of the Civil War by the abolitionists who established Lawrence, the University has been enriched throughout its existence by memorable personalities and events and strengthened by great traditions. Scholars, artists, scientists, athletes and visionaries have all helped shape KU.
Tradition of spirit
It is a warm, humid evening, much like any August evening in Kansas except for the energy in the air. It is being generated by thousands of new students gathered in Memorial Stadium for Traditions Night, their introduction to the Jayhawk mascots, the Rock Chalk chant, Waving the Wheat and more.
Multicultural community
The 28,000 students enrolled on all the KU campuses come from all 50 states and about 100 nations. Two of every three students are from the state of Kansas, and the male/female ratio is about even. Ethnic-minority students make up 9.2 percent of KU's population.
A view from the Hill
Jayhawk Boulevard, running parallel to the historic Oregon Trail, curves through the heart of campus. Sixteen buildings, in styles from Gothic to modern brick, stand along its tree-lined, half-mile arc. Their names honor chancellors, professors and donors who enriched more than 125 years of campus history.
The Jayhawk watches over campus
A "jayhawker" was an 1850s anti-slavery supporter said to combine the qualities of a blue jay and a sparrow hawk, and it's been a proud mascot since KU's earliest days.
