"Hope is a Magnet is the finest release yet by an artist with an immense amount of talent." (Delusions of Adequacy)
As the leader of San Lorenzo Owen Tromans has toured with Idlewild and gained support from the radio shows of Steve Lamacq and John Peel. Away from the band, Owen has been producing diverse and consistently engaging solo records for a while now. Lyrically rooted in English suburbia and the countryside that lies beyond, Owens music manages to combine what Time Out London called uncluttered and intensely beautiful ballads with fiery, guitar-based music.
Owen's first record was the self-produced Box of Tapes, released in 2001. Recorded to four-track over three years, running through hazy jams after school to breaks from playing with San Lorenzo, the record mixed finger-picked guitar mantras with brooding soundscapes and haunted songs. Housed in a hand-painted sleeve the record was met with acclaim, including a pick of the week from Delusions of Adequacy.
This release was followed in 2003 by From a Lost Library which still showcased instrumentals but also demonstrated Owen's growing confidence as a songwriter.
"Tromans's gift is the creation of a singular entity and emotion. He weaves a magical web of story and music that might initially seem understated but once you stop and breathe deep the proverbial roses, damn, you're hooked." Splendid (review of From a Lost Library)
In the summer of 2003 Owen recorded an album in Northern Italy with local musicians. This record became Place, a collection that features some of his finest narrative songwriting. Released on the Bearos label it gained wider distribution than any of his previous releases.
In the world of singer/songwriters Owen Tromans stands out as a man of few words and delicate, haunting musicianship. A quiet, unhurried album that gets under your skin with its intensity. Indie Workshop (review of Place)
Your Heart is not Broken (2005) is the follow-up to Place. The EP features a re-working of the live favourite Johns on the Bridge from Place. Whereas the album version is a meditative, building piece, here the song explodes with energy throughout its stormy 12 minutes. An incredible, emotive band performance.
The other tracks on the EP were recorded with the help of Joe Bennett of Goldrush and feature greater use of harmony vocals than previously found on an Owen Tromans release. Circle and the obligatory instrumental When there was Speedway demonstrate Owens gift for melody whereas The Woodcutter Song and The Queen of the May continue his reinvention of English folk forms.
Owen's new album, entitled Hope is a Magnet, is available now through Fire Digital and Sacred Geometry. Owen Tromans and The Elders will be back on tour in the summer.
