VERNON JONES FOR SENATE

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Joblessness, homelessness and a lack of healthcare are conditions that are colorblind. It's not about color. It’s about uniting America. I said those words June 8, 2008. My name is Vernon Jones, and I am happy to say that I officially launched Vernon Jones' myspace campaign for Georgia Senate several months ago, and both your response and support have been overwhelming. I hope to make many more new friends, and hopefully I'll run into some old ones. My message is clear. I believe Georgia needs a conservative democrat in the United States Senate. I share your concerns with the direction in which our country is going. I believe in a strong defense and unconditional support of our armed forces no matter where they are deployed. However, I am not satisfied with the progress and results we are experiencing in Iraq and we must not forget the war in Afghanistan. There must be a commitment to alternative energy sources, while maintaining and preserving a clean environment and green space for future generations. The needs of working families must be addressed; access to health care is an example. I believe that more can be done to maintain the stability and viability of Georgia’s businesses, both small and large. Issues confronting Georgia’s farmers and the agricultural community must be addressed as well. We must also seek solutions to the immigration challenges.I will be traveling throughout the great state of Georgia carrying my conservative message and engaging in an open and honest discussion about the important issues that affect us all. Thank you for your support and for taking the time to visit my website. I look forward to seeing you on the road. Remember that Vernon Jones is your best choice for U.S. Senate. www.vernonjonesforgeorgia.com

My Interests

I am the Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, Georgia, overseeing a $2.6 billion budget in the state's third most populous county.Elected countywide, I am the youngest person ever elected to the position. I manage 7,000 employees and direct the day-to-day county operations and also preside over the twice-monthly meetings of the Board of Commissioners.DeKalb County is among a select group of 37 counties out of nearly 4,000 to hold dual AAA bond credit rating from Moody's and Standard & Poors. This is a distinction earned under my Administration. Additionally, during the first 90 days in office, I spearheaded a skillful campaign that resulted in the countywide passage of a $125 million bond issue to buy land, greenspace and natural areas for DeKalb citizens. In 2005 I received voter approval on three additional bond referendums totaling $225 million for land preservation, transportation improvements, and new libraries. Some of my other major achievements include the adoption of a progressive ethics bill that deals with potential conflicts of interest of all senior executives, a comprehensive series of quality improvements for residential building standards, an institution of mandated customer service training for all county employees and adoption of a five-year plan to manage and improve services for senior citizens in DeKalb County.Prior to my election as CEO, I served eight years in the Georgia General Assembly as a State Representative from DeKalb County. During my tenure, I held positions on the powerful Appropriations and Insurance committees, and he also served as secretary of the Health and Ecology Committee and chairman of the Health Professions Subcommittee.I recently received a certificate from one of the executive programs at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. I serve as a member of the boards of the DeKalb Board of Health, the Atlanta Regional Commission, the DeKalb Library Board, the DeKalb Pension Board, and I am a former member of Emory University and North Carolina Central Univeristy's Board of Visitors.I am native of North Carolina, and I graduated from North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. I have formerly held leadership positions at MCI WorldCom and BellSouth Cellular. While with BellSouth, I was part of the information technology team that built a cellular system in Montevideo, Uruguay.

I'd like to meet:

I want to get the word out to all of my friends on MYSPACE that we as Georgians, and Americans, will no longer allow fiscal irresponsibility and waste by our Federal Government. I want to tell my friends about my ideas on border security, and health care. I want people to know that I will be pro-active about environmental concerns. I want to bring our brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Services home safely to their families from abroad. I want to meet like-minded people, to share ideas, and to make our state, and our nation, a better place. Let's engage in that conversation. Let's engage for America. Vernon Jones for U.S. Senate.
