I'd like to meet:
people who like to discuss ideas w/out their ego's involvement. ideas about society, civilization & the evolution of man. blah, blah, blah.
Music:
modest mouse, have listened to "the drowning dream" by augie march & love that, some "death cab...", frank zappa (the man outside the music box), this yard birds song (i think it's "i'm a man") which is amazing, i don't know too much about jazz/classical/blues/bluegrass, but i like some of that, sigur ros is a new find that i'm listening to now. listening to sons & daughters now, went to their show w/ the decemberists & missed them, dammit. saw kronos quartet last night. i love their classical commissioned stuff.
Movies:
welles, fellini, lumet. just saw thx 1138. calming. ikiru (to live) kurosawa was amazing. especially the scene where he is getting the diagnosis & he's in the waiting room & they are all doing a dance of balance in the frame, when 1 moves the other moves to balance in a kinisthetic way. we're doing a short film you can check-out at www.secretsofahollywoodnurse.com. we need the help.
Television:
don't have 1, but love "southpark" & "the simpsons", & saw 1 episode of "6 feet under" where the gay brother did crack or something bc he was being held up & he became turned on by his captor & i thought that was an honest & dark piece of human nature, that we all got to see. there should be more of that.
Books:
as a kid i did the whole fantasy/dragonlance/fiarytale/tolkein genre. also did asimov short stories & novellas. got into the classics for a bit, reading 1 or 2 books of an author. hardy, "portrait of the artist..." (the only joyce i read), camut, etc. then read daniel quinn, fictional philosophizing on the rise of this western civilization, started jared diamond's "guns, germs & steel". i'm reading herbert marcuse's "one-dimensional man" right now & jotting down thoughts for a play. this piece is from 1964 & he's discussing neo-capitalistic societies & the defense structure that ensures efficiency & man's dominance over nature. very cool concepts for a play.
Heroes:
i think it's dangerous to idolize someone, bc inevitably they are human, but i can appreciate a person who has struggled w/ the lack of reality IN reality & atleast verbalized that through some form of art. i'm reading a biography of eustace conway right now. he's a survivalist who has created a preserve in north carolina, bc he feels that we live in a completely unnatural way. i agree. that's enough for now.
