After eight years, Seven states traversed, Six national tours, Five Wami nominations, Four manic music videos, Three serious injuries, Two eclectic E.Ps and One acclaimed debut long player in last years “Lo-Fi Funeral”... Perth’s Heavy Weight Champ are set to retire!
Hugely influential in the creation of Perth’s now booming rock scene, Heavy Weight Champ’s part in the nation’s current embrace of all things Western cannot be denied. Founders of a scene that has spawned the likes of Karnivool and Gyroscope, Heavy Weight Champ were one of the first Western acts to drag the fledging national music infrastructure spotlight toward Perth, and they have been shipping W.A rock to the world ever since.
Renowned for their songwriting and one hell of a live show, Heavy Weight Champ will be splintering to pursue their own personal paths -
Singer/guitarist Grant McCulloch will pursue other musical endeavours including The Birkenhead, a bombastic hard rock project featuring former members of HWC, Headshot, Antistatic and Hope Here Gone, he will also continue working with the highly exported W.A drum and bass artist Shock One. McCulloch has spent much of this year collating a bag of acoustic tracks which he hopes to record in 2008.
Dean Miller will be leaving our shores to appease that travel bug that has bitten the drummer hard. A head chef by trade Miller will be working his way around the globe sampling the local wares and experiencing all that lies beyond Perth's city limits.
Low end specialist Luke Copeland will depart the rock 'n' roll lifestyle to concentrate on his new family after he and Wife Jane welcomed their new baby boy Flynn into the world a few months ago. No doubt Copeland will also be spending a little more time on his golf swing.
Although the band's demise is amicable and timely, the boys will most miss the live experience, and the chance to share their music with all the fans that have been a part of this eight year journey. So, in one last departing swipe Heavy Weight Champ will be returning to their favourite venue to close out what has been an amazing story.
On Friday December the 14th, Perth's Amplifier Bar will explode one last time as Heavy Weight Champ take to the stage. Alongside them in support will be Sons of Rico, Chaos Divine and The Order of the Black Werewolf. Doors will open at 8pm and their will be a few special performances on the night along with a swag of special merch...
Rarely will a champ reign for eight years, and who doesn’t wanna be there ringside to see them bow out gracefully. This is it fight fans... the final bout!
