About Me
My Name is Dean Walsh AKA Dj Devastator, I was first introduced to "rave" music when I was 12, when I was given a Fantazia double pack with Slipmatt and Ellis Dee; I used to play this along with commercial rave cassettes like "Rave 92". From here I started swapping tapes with friends, and soon I had a collection of over 300 tapes (Still have them), from event as Amnesia, Pandemonium, Fantazia, The Edge, Dance Paradise, Dance Planet, to name a few. I was too young to go out to raves but watched videos of them, one memorable one was Fantazia Big Bang, it looked amazing I just wanted to be older so I could go. Djs I used to listen to in the early years were Ramos, Slipmatt, Ratty, LTJ Bukem, Pilgrim, Ratpack, Grooverider, the list could go on.
I first had a play on proper dj turntables in 93 at a house party, I think it was a Soundlab setup, someone had a stack of Wazweazle and Babyboom tunes, and I had a go at mixing, I really enjoyed it and wanted some decks straight away, he mentioned he was selling them, and when I go the £150 he wanted for them a week later, he had sold them. He still had the old records, so I bought them, I didn’t have any turntables but planned on getting them, and just had an old Amstrad HiFi and used to try and mix and scratch. This got me into the harder edge music as these records were hardcore techno, and seemed heavier than the tunes I was listening too on cassette.
I started to listen to and buy more hardcore techno and when I got the Best of British Kinetic Techno Pack with HMS, Lofty, Producer and Scorpio, I used to listen to it in School / college on my walkman on the bus blaring it out for all to hear.
I soon got some Soundlab DLP3s and started mixing, and soon I bought more tunes from Spin Inn in Manchester when it was in the old Underground. Buying labels such as Deathchant, Screwface, Storm etc I used to create mix tapes and sold many in Spin Inn.
I finally had the courage to attempt to get into a Rave. My first being at Bowlers Asylum in Early 96, I remember being scared as it seemed so shady but as it was so big you just mooched about the place. After that night, I went on to do a night nearly every other week, to places such as Club Kinetic, DRT, Hardcore Heaven and Helter Skelter to name a few, up until the present day. I must have been to at least 300 Raves / Parties in the last 12 years.
I have played at a few Events over the years including local pubs and residencies on Extreme FM and at Decade, as well as Vibealite, Species, The Street, Oblivion, Incision, North Tour @ The Phoenix, Jasbof and soon at Uproar / Helter Skelter. I play a few styles including Hardcore Techno, Speedcore and Industrial.
