Riviere started as the brainchild of 2 musicians, guitarist Chris Cowan and guitarist / vocalist Chris Harvey.
The project began in early 2006 as Cowan’s latest musical effort had run its course. Having spent the majority of his musical career playing in “mediocre high school punk bandsâ€, Cowan decided to pursue a new endeavour, which would bring about a new musical direction for him.
Chris Harvey was busy fronting his own band at this time. However, due to line up changes and other unforeseen circumstances, the band broke up leaving Harvey unable to pursue his love for making music.
The 1st steps in the formation of the band were taken when Cowan approached Harvey about a project that would focus on a heavier and more raw sound that was unlike anything previously attempted by either guitarist.
The next few months would consist of crafting various song ideas with a makeshift line up that would inevitably part ways at the start of 2007. Not letting this setback hinder the strides they were making, Cowan and Harvey continued recording ideas at Harvey’s home studio.
After numerous attempts to find a bass player, former Ursula’s Bikini and Euture bassist Grant Robertson joined the line up.
Robertson attended the same college as Harvey and Cowan and was pursuing another music project when the offer to join the band was presented to him.
Many months passed with the search for both a new drummer and vocalist proving to be a difficult procedure. Eventually David Alford and his brother Michael, who sang and played drums respectively, were added to the line up at the start of June 2007.
