SISTERHOOD

About Me

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE SISTERHOOD MOVEMENT!!!
Deeyah Presents SISTERHOOD
Sisterhood is the collective name for a mixtape project of previously unreleased songs written by young up and coming female Muslim rappers, singers and poetesses from the UK, Europe and US.
Their songs deal with a range of issues that each has been affected by on some level ranging from the war in Iraq to racism, love, romance, living in a post 9/11 world, to women's rights issues, faith and personal experiences of being young socially conscious Muslim women in the West.
"This is just the first small step towards encouraging these artists and others like them out there to pursue their dreams and hopes," says Deeyah, the founder of the Sisterhood project who selected this first volume of songs from scores submitted to her."And a way to let them know they are not alone in their struggles and hardship to get their music and message out there."
SISTERHOOD is a project especially close to Deeyah's heart-- having always felt disheartened and disappointed by the lack of support for Muslim female artists, Deeyah decided to start this project to encourage and back female artists herself.
"Although some of the ladies on the project are at the very beginning of their musical journey and just starting to explore and discover their creative and artistic expression I hope that with this project they will find inspiration and encouragement from each other to further develop and hone their craft".
"Hopefully we can help create a platform to have their voices and opinions heard as both artists and Muslim women living in Western societies. Female Muslim artists face a tough time. There's very little support for them, many of them have been actively discouraged-- even by their own communities-- from expressing their thoughts and dreams through music. But they are not alone as this first collection proves...they have something to say and they deserve to be heard."

Her song for SISTERHOOD is called 'I Won't Cry' which is both a personal and very powerful song. 'I Won't Cry' is about the physical and emotional torment, pain and scars of rape. She has been writing poetry since she was young in her first language; which is French but she incorporates Arabic and English into them. “I approach all subjects in particular those that touch the condition of the woman: sexism, the forced marriages, the materialist women, racism, terrorism etc...” An observer of people and the ways of the world, Yasslam says this; life and her origin are all equal factors in inspiring her to write. “I think that a true passion is one you keep all your life. Our passions are within us to give meanings to our lives, otherwise we would not be happy.”
She reflects on this further; “I am a woman. I am Moslem and I’ve always wanted to express myself in this outlet so naturally.” She comments that its difficult to understand why our cultures don’t accept women singing/performing; yet she Yasslam is not conflicted. People who she comes across ask her if she considers herself Algerian or French, “Deep within me I know I belong to the two. I have enough room in my heart to contain these two countries’ cultures.” The song she has given for Sisterhood is called "Beautiful Algeria", to show her love not only to the people of the country but to outsiders too so they know the positive characteristics of the country which she holds dear to her heart.
