Bassist/Didgeridoo

About Me

Sweeney is currently playing bass for pyscadelic-indie-funk-disco band Elmore and looking for jazz and reggae projects to work with (how about some jazzae or reggazz?).Born and bred in rural Cambridgshire sweeney grew up on a mix of Early 90s rock (G &R, Nirvana, Smashing pumpkins, Rage Against The machine, Pearl Jam, Oasis, Blur, Chillis, etc) and late 80's /early 90's hip-hop (Tribe called quest, Naughty by nature, Dr.dre, snoop dogg, Nate dawg, Stolen 70s funk riffs etc). Other big influences at this time being; Bob Marley, Chuck Berry, Faithless, the Black Crowes. Sweeney played brass from the age of 13 to 15 (Eb tenor horn) but got bored and picked up the bass instead (it was much easier to carry around and people didnt look at you like you were a geek anymore).Moving to London in 2002 to study Sports Science Sweeney quickly got bored of the ins and outs of how the body works and what makes you run fast. Living with some drum and bass demons known as Ben shwarma and skinny timmy, sweeney quickly developed a love of D&B. This lead to many nights out on the town gettin down to some of the worlds notorious D&B DJ's. Whilst growing a fondness for D&B sweeny was also listening to a lot of UK hip-hop (Skitz,Roots Manuva, New Flesh..)and generally feeling a bit urban. Playing bass took a back seat for a while whilst sweeney was samplling the london music scence, trying to get a degree, making enuff money working in the SU Bar to get by and running a basketball team. After graduating and momentarily thinking about getting a proper job (trying to coach basketball full time), sweeney dusted down the bass and after moving to Acton (West london) had many a jam with local metal heads (Anton!) but found he had just too much funk. After a brief spell cleaning cars in Cambridge Sweeney returned to the smoke to play music. Working in a pub in Acton and living on south Acton estate with Eddie (anglo-brazilianite), Sweeney saved enough dough to think he had enough money to do a music course. After being moved on from the estate, Sweeny found sanctuary at the house of Taan Parker (drummer and generall all round genius). When again it was time to move Mr Parker Found the "cupboard"; a converted cupboard which would fit a single bed flush with walls (light switch on the outside, door opening outwards). Taan moved in to one of the other rooms of the house and sweeney would spend the next 8 months sleeping in the cupboard and playing bass (also in the cupboard).Having graduated from the Institute of contemporary music performance summer 2007, sweeney is free of the cupboard and living in Hanwell with his favourite people ever- the shimshacks.
