It's hard to
believe that more than 10 years have come and gone since
Poptown Records started
up in 1994. Poptown has survived the curse of the Seattle scene and has watched
the worst of the boy bands move beyond puberty. We are an independent record
label featuring new artists but not new trends. If you are a fan of music from
the 60's, 70's or even the 80's, we're sure to have some music that will interest
you. We are interested in what we call bands that '
make music for the sake
of making music'. No fads, no sell-outs, no rap, loops, or pre-fab nonsense.
If you prefer bands that have been influenced by
Led Zeppelin,
Aerosmith,
T-Rex or
Pink Floyd, then you're at the right place. If you wonder
"
Why doesn't anybody write songs like The Beatles or The Stones
anymore?" Then we're on the same page. Besides the sounds of classic
rock, we've got some guitar rock, acoustic rock, blues, punk and even a little
glam. Old School. As long as it's real, we'll carry it.
Based in New York, the world's most competitive city, Poptown had to fight
hard to be recognized. At first, the novice marketing department was having
difficulty launching artists like
Lovemaker and
Pin Ups. If it
wasn't for the raw tenacity of the bands, the company might not have lived to
fight another day.
Then, in 1996, Poptown teamed up with
People for the Ethical Treatment
of Animals (PETA) to produce a compilation record which was aimed at raising
awareness of animal rights issues. This idea took off and major artists of the
day (
Dee Snider of
Twisted Sister,
Richie Scarlet of the
Ace Frehley Band,
Enuff Z'nuff, etc.) were eager to get involved.
Even punk rock goddess
Joan Jett joined with
The Characters on
a track called "
Last of a Dying Breed" because of contractual reasons
her record company couldn't allow her name to be used.
The
PETA compilation, entitled "
Splitting Hares", took
off and brought the name Poptown with it. After that, it was hard to keep up
with the demand for more Poptown releases. As our roster of artists grew, so
did our audience.
Today, Poptown Records remains a very popular source of new music in
the industry. Coming of age in this day of internet technology has given Poptown
great opportunities to reach markets that were not accessible when we started
out. Recently, Poptown has teamed up with
CDFuse.com so that anyone anywhere
anytime can use a major credit card to order from our growing catalog.
Poptown embraces being an indie label. As you can see we encourage fans
to submit their own pictures of their favorite bands and we enjoy the personal
emails and communication back and forth. We are proud of our artists and of
the music we deliver. We are also interested in what you think of us. You're
questions and comments are welcome. Please contact us via email at
[email protected]
and tell us how we're doing.
