Band Members: EN The founding of the Indigo Quartet in the last year of the past millenium was a spontaneous event. We decided to explore a region of music which music history as it is taught at the higher institutions of music in this country mentions only marginally. Our encounters with jazz have been an entirely new and stimulating experience, especially because the above-mentioned make-up of the quartet is not a typical one of this music genre. To play and interpret jazz in this arrangement has been a challenge for us which has at times demanded of each player a high degree of technical skill but has opened up a large space for improvising and made us look for new ways of playing. The four members of the Indigo Quartet are Jan Belohlávek, Martin Flasar, Martina Himerová and Pavel Borský. Each of us, next to active playing, studied music either at a university or an academy of music. The repertoire of the quartet is fairly rich; it stretches from the very beginning of jazz (where the ragtimes of Joplin can undoubtedly be ranked) to the end of the twentieth century. During its existence in the last century jazz underwent a lot of changes, it gave rise to new genres and it influenced many areas of music. The Indigo Quartet in no way limit their range by merely exploring the area of the traditional jazz but often makes excursions into spirituals, rock, pop and world music. This is the reason why you will find in their repertoire compositions of Duke Ellington as well as songs of the Beatles, compositions of David Balakrishnan and those of Astor Piazzolla. The name of the quartet is derived from the famous composition Mood Indigo of Duke Ellington.
Influences: DE Das Indigo Quartett wurde spontan in dem letzten Jahr des Milleniums gegründet. Wir, die Mitglieder des Quartetts, entschlossen uns, ein Gebiet der Musik zu untersuchen, dem die klassische musikalische Ausbildung wenig Aufmerksamkeit schenkt. Die Begegnungen mit dem Jazz erwiesen sich als eine ganz neue und inspirierende Erfahrung, besonders deshalb, weil die obengenannte Besetzung für diese Art Musik nicht gerade typisch ist. Wir verstanden unser Vornehmen als eine Art Interpretationsaufforderung auf unsere technischen Fähigkeiten; eine Aufforderung, die ebenfalls einen breiten Raum zur Improvisation öffnet und neue Arten des Spielens ermöglicht bzw. erzwingt. Die vier Glieder des Quartetts sind Jan Belohlávek, Martin Flasar, Martina Himerová und Pavel Borský. Wir alle, nebst dem Spielen, befassen uns mit Musik auch theoretisch, indem wir Musik an Hochschulen und Akademien studiert haben. Das Repertoire des Quartetts ist ziemlich abwechslungsreich, es erstreckt sich von den Anfängen des Jazz (da könnten Joplins Ragtimes eingeordnet werden) bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Auf seinem Weg durch das vorige Jahrhundert hat der Jazz vielerlei Änderungen durchgemacht, neue Genres haben sich von ihm abgesondert und andere Musikbereiehe sind von ihm beeinflusst worden. Das Indigo Quartett beschränkt sich keinesfalls auf den „klassischen Jazz“, sondern versucht sich auch in den Spirituals, dem Rock, Pop und World Music. Aus diesem Grunde findet man im Repertoire neben den Musikstücken des Duke Ellington auch z. B. Kompositionen der Beatles, die des David Balakrishnan und Astor Piazzolla. Der Name des Quartetts ist von dem bekannten Musikstück des Duke Ellington „Mood Indigo" abgeleitet.
