According to the CDC, there have been over 944,000 reported cases of AIDS in the United States since 1981 and over 529,000 of them have died. The number of new AIDS cases (per year) has been rising since 2001; and in 2004, that number reached an estimated 42,514 new AIDS cases in just one year. According to the World Health Organization, young people (15-24 years old) account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide - more than 6,000 become infected with HIV every day. AIDS is a virus that knows no prejudice, and affects all of humanity regardless of age, race, culture, or sexual preference. We, at Unified Hearts, believe that the only way to eradicate this terrible pandemic is to reinforce the education of prevention. We must educate our youth on the means in which to prevent infection.
We, as a society, have made great strides in boosting awareness about AIDS, as well as increasing sensitivity for those who have been affected by it. However, we still fail to assist our youth with the basic fundamental knowledge in which to prevent and avoid infection. Are we too afraid to tell our children the facts? Are we hoping that by simply telling our children not to have sex, the problem will just go away? The CDC has indicated that, along with a recent rise in new AIDS cases, there has also been a recent rise in sexual activity among young people (ages 15-19.) There have been over 800,000 teen pregnancies reported in The United States so far this year. This problem is not going to go away on its own; nor is this problem going to be resolved with a stern "Don't do that".
Have we overlooked the fact that a terrorist does exist among all humans?
At this very moment, The United States is at war with terrorism. The War on Terror has claimed thousands of lives, and shows no sign of stopping. However, there is an even greater killer, a silent terrorist, which has claimed more lives in the past year, than the entire War on Terrorism. In the absence of a chemical cure for AIDS, our only weapon - our only cure - is the education of prevention.
Lets teach everyone to be kind, compassionate and understanding towards those living with this dreadful disease. Lets stop the judgment, prejudice, hate, crime and over all, the stigma that we have wrongfully attached towards HIV and or AIDS, which is a human issue not a group issue.
