"One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time."
~ Andre Gide
“Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need...a homely home and simple pleasures ~ one or two friends worth the name ~ someone to love and someone to love you ~ a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two ~ enough to eat and enough to wear ~ and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.â€

Far Out, Man!!
Welcome Back!!
I am LOVIN' my job!!
"Today I bent the truth to be kind to a friend, and I have no regret. You see, I am far surer of what is kind, than I am of what 'the truth' could do to him if I spoke it aloud."
~ Quinn Vandefurr
"Together we can rally behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us is too important to do otherwise."
~ Senator Hillary Clinton
Is it just us, or are Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett the two TRUE GENTLEMEN playing basketball today?
Respect to the 2008 NBA Champions, The Boston Celtics!
“Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you.†~ H. Jackson Brown
“What makes humility so desirable is the marvelous thing it does to us; it creates in us a capacity for the closest possible intimacy with God.â€

"All cruel people describe themselves as paragons of frankness and truth."
~ Tennessee Williams
"Whenever people say, 'we mustn't be sentimental', you can take it they are about to do something cruel. And if they add, 'we must be realistic', they mean they are going to make money out of it."
~ Brigid Antonia Brophy
“There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don't expect you to save the world, I DO think it's not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary, and remove from your lives those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect.â€
~ Nikki Giovanni
“What we have to do... is to find a way to celebrate our diversity and debate our differences without fracturing our communities.â€

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
by Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
(Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!)
Music:
I LOVE music...there are too many favorites to list here! But, I especially enjoy Van Zant, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, the Beatles, Bhagavan Das, Wynne Paris, Deva Premal, James McMurtry, Billy Joel, The Dixie Chicks, and Stevie Wonder. Very eclectic!
I love to sing, and I used to record demos for songwriter friends who would ask me to sing their "girl songs" to send to Nashville. So, Country music is also high on the list. Like anything, it just depends upon my mood...
Movies:
I LOVED August Rush, starring Freddie Highmore ("It's all around us...all you have to do is listen!")
Cross Creek, starring Mary Steenburgen and Peter Coyote ("Nothing is going to happen between us...")
The Wizard of Oz, starring Billie Burke as Glinda, The Good Witch of the North ("Be Gone! You have no power here!")
Captain Ron, starring Kurt Russell ("Yer damn right, Swab, you get your OWN beer!")
Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner ("Ease his pain...")
Summer Rental, starring John Candy ("Oh look who lives next door! Lifeguards! A whole GAGGLE of 'em!")
Legends of the Fall, starring Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt ("Screw the gv'mnt! SCREW 'EM!")
Unforgiven, starring Clint Eastwood ("Some years later, Mrs. Ansonia Feathers made the arduous journey to Hodgeman County to visit the last resting place of her only daughter. William Munny had long since disappeared with the children...some said to San Francisco where it was rumored he prospered in dry goods. And there was nothing on the marker to explain to Mrs. Feathers why her only daughter had married a known thief and murderer, a man of notoriously vicious and intemperate disposition.")
Anything with Johnny Depp...
especially Don Juan de Marco,
Chocolat,
and Blow.
And, my favorite ten-hanky melodrama of all time...Now Voyager, starring Bette Davis ("Don't let's ask for the moon...we have the stars!")

Television:
I think Cesar Millan is amazing! I admire him so much, and I LOVE to watch his program, "The Dog Whisperer", on the National Geographic Channel.
Otherwise, I mostly like to watch sitcoms...My current favorites are "Two and a Half Men" and "My Name is Earl" .
Books:
I prefer inspirational, or spiritual, books...anything by Thich Nhat Hanh, Denise Linn (Sacred Space changed my life!), or Paul Ferrini. Although my husband, Larry, does all the cooking, I LOVE Pat Conroy's cookbook! With each recipe, he provides a beautiful narrative (as only Pat Conroy can do), and the book is remarkable.
Heroes:
My Aunt Donna said to me so often, "Larry is SO MUCH like Red!" What a magnificent stroke of luck, FOR ME!
As I get older, I realize that my "heroes" are just "everyday people" who are living ~ or have lived ~ their lives heroically...my parents, my Aunt Donna and Uncle Red, my cousins Leslie and Kent...all family members and friends battling illness or some other monumental challenge
day-by-day; young couples working together to build a fulfilling relationship; parents struggling for balance between working hard and nurturing and teaching their children; people around the globe whose daily lives are encompassed in a constant struggle against poverty, oppression, illiteracy, physical handicaps, pollution, etc., yet their strength of spirit keeps hope alive; and, The Peacemakers ~ anyone working for peace on any level, to any degree.

From one of my Sophomore year geometry tests:
When I was in High School, I was failing geometry. The day before my final exam, my parents drove me to see my Brilliant Cousin Kent, and he tutored me for two or three hours, that afternoon. I learned more in that one afternoon than I had the entire school year! I managed to pass the class with a "D"...and I was VERY pleased to have passed at all! Kent has always been one of my SUPER Heroes! (And, he really IS "Brilliant"!)
