Born and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, side by side with the rebellious growth of Hip Hop, Nomi began singing before she could speak in full sentences. Brought up by her single mother in a one bedroom apartment, she spent most of her life locked away in a room full of fantasy and song. She used music as her escape and began composing ballads around Hip-Hop heavy street samples. Her deep, dreamy vocals found refuge in these raw arrangements, creating a unique blend of soul music. One of these earlier songs 'You'll Never Know' appeared on The Enlightened Family Compilation released by Voodoo EROS
She found her way through rough terrain and into the arms of producers who usually work with emcees, but caught an interest in her distinct writing and vocal performance. The result was a 7 track EP titled ‘Hustler’. A raw attempt at reinventing Hip Hop & R&B, combining testosterone driven beats with tender, vulnerable vocals & melodies. The title track was set to a loop from Nas’ ‘Drunk By Myself’ off ‘The Lost Tapes’ LP. ‘Hustler’ caught the attention of a London ad agency looking to branch out into the music industry and Nomi was swept off her block and relocated to Covent Garden, London UK to become the lead singer of the pop group ‘The Speed Angels’.
When returning to New York, she dove into New York's underground to seek out sounds that deviated from top 40 commercial Hip Hop and R&B. She sought out producers with these same influences and began working on what was to become her first full length album titled 'Lost In Lust' , an auto-biographical snap shot of life on the streets of Brooklyn. 'Lost In Lust' touched on topics such as depression, drug addiction, family abandonment and the struggle of a single mother. The record was self released under the Park Side Records label and is being compared to a union between Wu-Tang Clan’s The RZA on beats and Sade on vocals.
Since the album's release Nomi has toured Europe & the US with CocoRosie , opening for them to a sold out crowd at The Bowery Ballroom and at The Vox Populi art gallery in Philly. She performed at costume designer/stylist Patricia Field's residence for Fashion Week 2006, appeared on NPR’s Spinning On Air with David Garland and recently toured Europe with Antony & The Johnsons as one of 13 NYC Beauties in the ‘Turning’ Tour. This February, she appeared on Arte in a show titled 'New York's Super Women' that featured strong, independent, creative women such as Deborah Harry, Patricia Field & Princess Superstar.
She is now working on her Sophomore album which will feature collaborations with the King of New York's Underground Ill Bill , DJ High Priest , member of Basquiat's avante-garde band GRAY and Death Comet Crew (DCC), as well as a band which includes Cellist/Producer Marlan Barry and Drummer Todd Cohen, member of The Machine who appeared on Antony & The Johnsons' award winning album 'I Am A Bird Now'.
Nomi can also be found curating shows at venues such as Joe's Pub & Tonic.
'Lost In Lust' now available on iTunes.
