Rife was started in June 2005 by Jacques du Plessis and Adrian Erasmus, the two friends wanted to create music that was powerful and emotional, music which would take their audience on a trip though dynamic melodies and strong harmonies. To do this they knew they had to find a vocalist who could bring the point across with solid tunes and expressive lyrics, little did they know that the vocalist they were looking for was long time friend, Naeem Rajah.
Together the three friends recorded their first song, Threads in Time, in late June 2005 and found out that they had something quite unique.
While Adrian and Jacques continued writing songs, it was suggested by Naeem that they audition another vocalist to add to the bands sound. So in July they brought in a second vocalist, Zehad Moses who added a poetic element within the music dynamics with his controversial lyrics and emo/screamo fator. They then re-recorded the vocals on Threads in Time and recorded a new song, Broken Abused.
The sound they got during these recordings is what makes the band special, with twin vocals and powerful riffs, Rife is set to make a dent in the South African music scene.
They were missing just one thing, a drummer.
So during the month of July they spent most of their time auditioning drummers with little success, until a friend informed them of a drummer who was looking for a band, and who had a unique sound. They asked Rowan Emslie to come audition and finally found what they were looking for.
They played their first gig at Vagabonds in Randburg on the 25th of November 2005 to a fully packed venue, and have since played venues such as Roxys, London Calling, The Songwriters Club, Tempo's, The Blues Room and The Nile Croc, and have shared the stage with bands such as Inersha, Knave, 16 Stitch, Unlisted, F... Etc and Unwritten Friday and many more.
In the begining of 2006 Rife decided to record there debut album with Truthcore Records and commenced recording the album in the begining of May.
Their independent debut album CARDIOCENTESIS ESPIONAGE is was release in November 2006.
Then then shot a music video (DEFINGING HANDGUNS) which is due for release in march.
Rife is a band devoted to their music, and together with passionate vocals and good, solid music, it seems destined for the top. With influences ranging from Story of the Year to Primus to The Mars Volta, the band is set on making a name for themselves world wide. Hailing from Johannesburg, their first target is the music industry in their home country of South Africa. From there they plan to take on the world.
