The duo puts to shame 99% of the roll and the rock bands today who have at least twice the members. Hyperbole this extreme may sound off putting yet reason exists for these imaginative flights.The two piece, Ervin and Dave, are the ultimate and zenith of cover bands. They transcend such a concept as “cover†because the two bludgeon “popular†and sacred cow songs. They interpret tunes into absurd awkward comedic gymnastics while simultaneously pulling out the dark and dirty subtleties hidden within the composition.Dave plays the bass, yells militantly and sometimes switches off on drums. Ervin plays evil guitar and also plays drums. The two approach the roll and the rock concept as Lo- Fi deconstructionists, yet with caterwauling fun instead of heavy handed pretension. The two are theatre without theatre forcing Becket to wait for Godot for a change.“We Got the Beat†starts the tape rolling. A happy, creeped out ghost child’s voice introduces the song. The Go Go’s tune is reduced to skuzzy, pornographic fuzz rock. The funny thing is the words are not dirty. The song is pulled inside out.The sacred Hendrix cow is slaughtered with their rendition of “Foxy Lady.†The song is a crashing (anvil) heavy metal bellow. Furby takes the sex out and forces the latent violence out. The song’s original negative space is stabbed with what most people will take as the wrong kind of feedback, that high piercing tone. The song goes all giggles at the once sexed up “Here I come baby/I’m coming to getcha.â€The Hendrix cover directly segues into Mudhoney’s “If I think.†The two throw mud all over the angst fueled shenanigans, out fuzzing and buzzing Mudhoney.Prime U2 is also submerged into Furby tactics. The politico lyrics are reverted back to yelping components of language, just the primal confusion of syllables. The bass has a dark river feel. Bono’s histrionics are slapped and the edge’s guitar style is completely non existent.Even their fellow Georgians, Collective Soul are kidnapped and copyrighted into subversion. “Shine†is a propulsion of bass and raw drums. The shouting of the song is turned into hardcore. The lyrics are bellowed killing the hippie alternative nightmare. They bring out the primal guttural ritual chant. Collective Soul, whom have Christian tendencies, are revealed as the pagans the band failed to be through their massive corporate cocaine denial. The creepy child voice makes a fart joke at the end of that wrong kind of feedback, which rears out of the murk again.Forty Foot Furby don’t just rock. They know the rock ballad. Poison’s “Every Rose has its Thorn†is given freedom to be a country song before kicking into high voltage dynamics. The vocals have that twang that Bret Michaels was not allowed to do. His record company probably thought that would be too much poison or be sissy. It feels like David Allen Coe is in the room, obscenities and shouts about cowboys!The tape is choking full of warped intentions. “Love is a battlefield†finally lives up to its title. “Patience†is made impatient by busting out Axel Rose’s inner drug slobbering child. David Allen Coe is the psychiatrist!The lone original among originality is “Theme from the 40ty Foot Furby.†The song has the creepy kid singing with some riff action sludge pulled from Metallica’s And Justice for All album.This self titled release is probably one of the rarest releases to find because of the DIY obscurity. This hard to find quality makes mystery and mystique. What the hell does this band mean? The most original music is hardly ever heard. If one can track down someone who knows someone who knows someone in the band, jump and shout, plot to get this fucked up psychosis of beauty, pillage and fun!Matthew D. Proctor spends his days and nights involved in shady, esoteric rambles while conversing in heated debates with William Blake.
