UGA V, COACH VINCE DOOLEY: A Mobile, Ala. native and former Auburn University quarterback, Dooley came to the University of Georgia as head football coach in December 1963. Before UGA, Dooley spent two years in the Marines and came back to coach Auburn's freshman football team. In two of the three seasons he coached, the freshmen went undefeated.Dooley, then 31, had never been a head coach prior to coming to Georgia. But just three years after coming to Georgia, Dooley had won the first of six Southeastern Conference titles he and his teams would claim -- in 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, and 1982. During his 25-year coaching career -- which ended in 1988 when he became Georgia's full-time athletic director -- Dooley would amass a record of 201-77-10, and would get his teams to 20 post-season bowl games. During his tenure as coach and athletic director, Dooley took the 1980 Bulldogs to the Sugar Bowl. The team beat Notre Dame to go 12-0 and earn the national championship -- a feat last accomplished under Wally Butts in 1942. Dooley later was named the 1980 NCAA coach of the year. At the University of Georgia, Walker set an NCAA freshman rushing record, earned consensus All-American honors for three consecutive years and set 10 NCAA records. In 1982, he won the coveted Heisman Trophy as a junior.
