Reviews: Gwylo & Micoland album Reinfections!
I’ve just listerned to your album on my way to Norfolk. I feel i’ve been taken on a tour of a disused power station wearing wet clothes and then been left alone in a rotting waste disposal unit. It has now got quite foggy, i feel slightly uneasy. Great stuff!!!
Gwylo and Micoland are veterans of Leeds’ free party scene, having established their night Gonzo at the forefront of the experimental noise movement in the city. The Reinfections LP showcases some of their collaborations, ranging from the twitchy trip-hop of All’s Changed to the fearsome gltches and off-kilter dubstep rumblings of Double Sided Tape. Veering constantly from the Detroit-feeling simplicity of early Warp and Rephlex recordings to the sparse but epically heavy dubstep territory of Digital Mystikz works surprisingly well – the resultant brew is engaging and has real depth, patterns seeming to bleed into each other, reinfecting and spreading polyrhythms in a strange mirroring of the germ-themed artwork. Culminating in the abstract jungle of Encounta (STD Mix), this mini-LP establishes Gwylo & Micoland as genuinely interesting producers – their techno-organic sound is a unique fusion of disparate styles.
22 year old musician, producer and performer Gordon Edwards, has been on many many adventures in his time, many involving beats and patterns, from the far east in Bangkok as a kid to the grey shades of the north of England and to the big cities left, right and forwards! He now concerntrates his efforts in the realms of technological revolutions in sound, bending and recreating sounds vintage and unclassified.
When not making music of an abstract nature he's organizing the monthly rave up that is GONZO (www.gonzo.me.uk) and resident at www.twisted-radio.com (every Wed.) Recent milestones have been putting on the Electronic alldayer in (Leeds) called the Filterbank Festival and the electronic stage called the Twisted Ballroom at Moor Music Fest.
