Alvaro Brites started his career as a dj in the beginning of the 90's, when the first dance music party's began happening in Portugal and the electronic music starts rulling the dance floors in all over the Europe.
In the early 90's the label KAOS Portugal as well as Tribal America used to make their big party's in castles, conventries and also in abandoned factory's. Both of them contributed with its best sound played by names like Tenaglia, Vazquez, Tony Humphries and the Underground Sound of Lisbon/ Dj Vibe and Rui da Silva aka Doctor J. That entire ambience led to a more underground sound, which really stimulated him to begin his career as a dj.
Together with his friends, Gustavo and Oswaldo, Alvaro began playing in clubs, bars and party's that the group itself used to promote in their hometown. Aveiro is a city by the beach in the Atlantic and DELIRIUM was the name chosen for this group of three dj's which immediately began to be well known in this central coast of Portugal. Their days were spent in the ‘bunker', as it was called. Nothing more than a cave in a house with 3 Technics turntables, mixer, power amplifier and 2 stereo speakers. That was really enough for them to practice and listen to the vinyl they bought. Techno and Hard House were both styles that Alvaro began to identify with.
Although he used to play as a dj, he was also very interested in the new technology of musical production. The music was created only by a signal composed of several different effects, in which he very early began to get interested and later on was pleased to explore in his sound classes.
In 1995 he moves to London where he begins attending his course of Sound Engineering at SAE (School of Audio Engineering) in Caledonian Rd Studios. All his doubts related to sound were then clarified. His theoretical classes were taught by sound technicians belonging to famous bands such as Soul to Soul, whereas his practical ones were spent in studio, sequencing the AKAI Sampler in Cubase.
During the time he spent in London, he used to go very regularly to clubs such as Ministry of Sound, The End and Labyrinth. However, his favorite place where he could find himself more comfortable was a small club in Charring Cross Rd , called Velvet Underground where Carl Cox, Jim Masters and Underworld/Darren Emerson had their dj residency. The concept of ”clubbing”, as the true meaning of this word, was always what Alvaro really preferred. A place only for 350 people/ maximum enabled a better quality of sound as well as ambience. Besides, it was easier to get in touch with the dj's and consequently the exchange of ideas related to labels, releases and promos. Tag, Blackmarket, Fatcat, and Uptown Records were the first ones to be visited when he wanted to get new music.
Although he identified himself more and with Techno and Hard House, he began to really appreciate House and UK Garage. The radio station Kiss 100.fm with Sara HB used to broadcast daily mixes of Frankie Knuckles, David Alvarado and Marshal Jefferson. It was a very lighter sound, although it was rich and elaborated.
This way, Alvaro begins to play in his sets a NuDisco and Filtered House in a place in Soho Square in the very heart of London . It was a venue called Zebra Bar where some dj and house producers used to go and where the vocal and classic house had a great influence.
Returning back to Portugal in 98, he goes on playing in party's through Dreamwork. He played mostly in open air after-hours party's on Sunday mornings and afternoons, which allowed him a more diversified style within the House and Techouse. He was also been invited to help in the construction of record studios and, using all his knowledge and information he had got in SAE, he moved in to Oporto, where he contributed for the re-construction of two rooms for the studios of The Oporto's Jazz School.
During the last couple of years Alvaro Brites has frequently played House and Deep House in The Opçao Bar, a big reference bar on the beach in his hometown on the central coast of Portugal. In January 2007 he starts to attend the ECA/ USP (University of Sao Paulo) in order to finish his course of The New Technologies of Communication. Since then he has been performing as a dj in Brazil .
As soon as he arrived in Sao Paulo he has been invited to play in several reference clubs and dinning clubs in town such as CafedelaMusique, Museum, Clash, Lotus and Hotel Club, among others. His strong experience and deep versatility of styles let him also create several audiences.
He has also been invited to play in private party's and events. He usually plays at the Supper Club Bangalôo in Camburi Beach on the north coast of Sao Paulo where he started to play when he first arrived in Brazil . At the moment, apart from other clubs, he plays regularly at the Dinning Club CafedelaMusiuque adopting a very lounge and soulful style.
“… I appreciate good electronic music in general. It goes from Soulfull that I usually play in dinning clubs to Electrohouse that I play in dance floors. Whenever I can, if the atmosphere and the sound system is really good, I play progressivehouse. I love NuDisco and Deephouse which I always play at the beach. I don't like to impose a single style to myself. It all depends on my mood, place, time and the kind of public that I am playing to.”
