What is striking about Free-way,
aside from their obviously keen work ethic, is the range of styles
attributable to the multitude of influences each member brings.
Front man Kris Oddy has a raw, emotive singing style;
at times angry yet strangely tender and clearly reminiscent
of Kurt Cobain, although still rich in originality,
and matched perfectly to his enigmatic centre-stage presence.
Lead guitarist Lol Oddy provides soaring Zeppelin-esque solos
and speedy punk riffs that he delivers effortlessly.
His serene stage presence should not be confused with
nonchalance but instead recognised as pure dedication,
which creates a charming dichotomy between
himself and twin brother Kris.
Free-Way are driven by convoluted and explosive rolls
executed with a speed and power by drummer Tim Crook.
Intriguing to watch, he differentiates from the norm of drummers,
not once appearing as a stony faced time keeper
but instead as an integral and exciting part of the band.
Dave Delgado is the highly accomplished bassist,
responding quickly and intuitively to direction from
the rest of the band whilst never hesitant to inject some originality.
An exhilarating blend of punk, grunge and rock,
not one song in their energetic back catalogue sounds
the same as another. Powerful numbers like Breaking Me
and Peace from the machines have catchy undercurrents
and sing along choruses whilst stand out track In My Chair
has a gorgeous introspective quality and reveals a more
delicate side to the Free-Way sound; yet all of these elements
coalesce brilliantly with particularly impressive vocals
on the stunning Down at the Bottom and Show Me.
