If Music be the food of love, sing on!!

About Me

Hi there, welcome to my corner on Myspace. You're invited to listen to my tracks; let me know what you think of them. All tracks are taken from the first CD by TUHÚ; it has been released in the fall of 2007.Tuhú basically consists of five musicians with very different backgrounds - classical music, jazz, world music - but with a common goal: having fun in making music together, and performing live on stage as much as possible. We are basically occupying ourselves with music from the South-Americas: Peru, Cuba, Chili, Argentina, Brasil. Lots of Piazzolla, Luis Bonfa, Tom Jobim, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and others. Styles: tango, samba, zamba, chamame, choro, modinha, etc. Instruments: guitar, cavaquinho, recorders/flutes, double bass, vocals.Another great project: VanDijkenMezzopranen. The name is untranslatable. A group of four, moving around the stage in a lavish display of vocal and instrumental joy, both in music and in life. Theatre songs in Dutch with a bite, performed by two composers/pianists: Martin van Dijk and Klaas van Dijk, and two singers: Wiebke Göetjes and myself. We had a swell try-out in Portugal: take a look at the photos. The new show will have its premiere in Spring 2009.What else can I tell you? Well, I'm a professional singer, performing in opera and classical concert music besides Tuhú, and I teach music. At the moment I'm also involved with the theatre group "La Sopera". We are currently playing and singing in a theatre performance called "Blood & Honey". See the website for a taste of it: www.la-sopera.nl. If you want to know more details about my professional life, read my blogs. The Dutch one is available right now; the English one will be published soon.My life evolves around music, basically. But that doesn't mean that I have no time or energy for other things. Most important in my life is my daughter, a flourishing 15-year old. She is my pride and joy, and I am very grateful that I was apparently destined to be her mother. And then there are my wonderful family members, and my dear, dear friends who love me, and whom I love back. After a long interval due to knee surgery I am working on getting back in shape. I hate fitness, doing it anyway, but I love dancing. I took a belly dance work shop recently; great fun. But it's so difficult! Looking at myself in the mirrors in the dance studio made it quite clear I need to practice a little more before it is acceptable for others to look at. But I enjoyed myself thoroughly, and I found it very comforting to be able to work at it in 3-hour practice runs. I also like ballroom dance. And Flamenco. And there's cycling and swimming too.You want to know what I'm like? Well, as far as I know (still learning..) I'm passionate, sensuous, loyal, warm-hearted, socially skilled, equipped with an occasional wicked sense of humour. But I can be pig-headed at times, and a bloody nuisance every now and then. I am unconventional, leftish in a political sense, left-handed in another. Calling me left-handed in my case is a compliment. Thank you in advance. Any questions? Let me know!

My Interests

Music:

Influences: INFLUENCES. Musically speaking:Classical vocal and instrumental music from 1600 to contemporary music; jazz, folk music, Latinamerican music, Flamenco.OTHER SOURCES: Literature, poetry, cinema. And all those wonderful, exciting, sweet, captivating, irresistible, obnoxious, adorable, warm, affectionate, naughty, playful, musical people around me who over the years have taught, surprised, inspired and elated me.
Sounds Like: SOUNDS LIKE: ME! YEAH!!. A regular mezzo-soprano. Not quite as high as a soaring soprano, but not as razor sharp either. Just as low as an alto voice, but without the occasionally disturbing male quality. My voice has a life of her own, and over the years I've learned to give her the space she needs to flourish. My voice is powerful and strong, but also pleasant, warm and flexible; a lyrical sound with a sensuous touch of drama if required. Able to give different colours and power to different styles. Expressive and dynamic. And sometimes slightly clouded by a hunch of breath. If necessary for the repertory, or caused by a cold. But always, always feminine.
