At 15 Skilton started playing the electric bass guitar and excelled with it. By 17 years of age, he was playing in professional situations on as full time basis and within a year of that, working A circuits through Feldman and Timeless production agencies and then leading into professional studio and session work in both Calgary and Vancouver with such acts as X-Files and Viper television soundtrack, Greg Howe and Annihilator to name a few. After 16 years of being immersed in the entertainment industry, Skilton became disillusioned with the secular side of music creativity in the progressive rock genre. He watched as saturation, and a decline in passionate creativity coupled with an increase in the growing popularity of designer drugs, alcohol and the immoral social scene, destroying friends and fellow musician’s lives around him. With this new revelation, Skilton made some much needed life changes, relocating to Northern B.C. to start over.
During the darkest time of his life, Skilton began a brand new journey that would change his very direction and give him renewed passion towards his lifelong love for music. After marrying the woman that brought him to the Lord, and after many moves trying to find their place. God brought them to Kitimat. Not understanding why God would bring him to a place completely void of making a living in the music industry, Skilton had to re-evaluate his gifts and what God would have him do with them. After several years of seeking God’s will and direction and learning to put Him absolutely first in his life, God has started giving Skilton a whole new understanding of how the Lord longs to show the world a whole new level on creative expansion we have not yet seen.
Skilton truly admits that the world has accomplished incredible forms of creativity and beauty in the arts throughout history and to this day but feels that we’ve only scratched the surface to what’s available, but also fears that the secular side of creativity is slowly but surely approaching an absolute saturation and self destruction with an infinite number of artists all over the world sacrificing everything in their lives only to accomplish something that only a very few will ever these days. With the layoff of over 50 % of major music execs in the last 10 years, the rise of the digital domain, piracy, independent recording studios, artistic delusions, lies, selfish and perverted ambitions. Skilton also knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God desires to release a huge measure of creativity, ability and imagination to His glory, through those who are called and willing to fight for it without compromise. Skilton has a strong foundation as a supportive bass player and, as a soloist and is very much behind contributing to taking the instrument to higher levels of creativity and expressiveness but, the Lord has also broadened his horizons believe it or not,, embracing traditional classical and orchestral composing utilizing modern technology of midi and virtual instruments and is pursuing towards cinematic and theatrical production composing and recording in God’s kingdom and the Christian community.. And to let everyone out there know that he is always available for session work
