At the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, the Japanese beauty was crowned Miss Universe 2007 at the age of 20.A self-described "modern-day female samurai," Riyo prides herself on having a great sense of independence and self, "the traditional samurai spirit prizes composure, patience and a sense of justice. It is someone who fearlessly faces challenges with a strong will." Riyo definitely embodies an independent woman. By the age of 16, she left her home in Shizuoka, Japan to study abroad in Canada, eventually reaching New York at 19 years old. Through her travels and studies, Riyo has been able to master adapting to different environments, the importance of learning foreign languages and the need for intercultural understanding. When her host guardian in Canada was suffering from hearing loss, Riyo learned American Sign Language to communicate. This experience eventually led her to volunteer with Deaf children, working on art activities.A dancer and performer since the age of four, Riyo has spent most of her life focused on her craft. Her mother runs a dance school in their hometown, where Riyo first discovered her passion. She was literally surrounded by dance, where classes were held on the bottom level of their house. It wasn't long before she was traveling the world in pursuit of her career. Riyo studied at the Quinte Ballet School of Canada, the Radio City Rockettes' Summer Intensive and was also accepted to the Broadway Dance Center in New York, but ultimately turned down the offer when she realized she made it to the finals of Miss Japan. "Everything was prepared; I even had an apartment in New York. But having the chance to become Miss Universe was beyond any dream. I had to do it."With the title of Miss Universe now under her belt, Riyo is as determined as ever. She aspires to become the first Japanese Radio City Rockette and will eventually open an international dance school in Tokyo, Japan. "My mother taught me that women can have it all. You donÃt have to choose between having a family or career, you can do both." Riyo intends on spreading this message of empowerment and independence to women all over the world, just as her mother has for her.Riyo is also excited to start championing the official causes of MISS UNIVERSE®, which include increasing HIV/AIDS awareness by focusing on womenÃs health and reproductive issues and forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education, including the Latino Commission on AIDS, Global Health Council and GodÃs Love We Deliver.RIYO MORI was crowned Miss Universe Japan on 15 March 2007 and was crowned by outgoing titleholder Kurara Chibana. As Japan's representative in the Miss Universe 2007 pageant, Mori traveled to Mexico City, Mexico in early May to participate in four weeks of events, rehearsals and preliminary competitions with the other seventy-seven delegates. In the final competition, broadcast internationally on May 28, 2007, Mori was announced as one of fifteen semi-finalists who would move forward to compete for the title. She achieved the highest score in the swimsuit competition, which advanced her to the top ten and the evening gown competition, in which she placed fourth. In the last round, Mori was asked by ELLE Magazine fashion director and Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia, to speak about something she learnt in past but benefited from also in youth. Mori said that since childhood she is dancing and hence she is always surrounded by students. Due to interactions with them, she has become happy, positive and patient. At the conclusion of the competition, she was crowned Miss Universe, becoming the second woman from Japan to hold the title. The first Miss Universe winner from Japan was Akiko Kojima in 1959. Mori is the eighth Asian woman to win the pageant, the most recent being Lara Dutta of India who was Miss Universe 2000. Mori was the third Japanese woman to place in the top five at Miss Universe in the past five years. Miyako Miyazaki placed fourth runner-up at Miss Universe 2003, and Mori's predecessor Kurara Chibana was first runner-up in 2006.

Miss Earth
After establishing a track record in mounting world-class beauty pageants over the last decade, Carousel Productions Inc. decided to reinvent and improve the concept of beauty competitions for the new millennium.
Because many people admire and aspire to be a beauty queen, Carousel Productions, Inc. believed beauty queens would be a good and effective advocate of worthy causes. To give life to this vision, Carousel organized and launched in 2001 the MISS EARTH® Beauty Pageant, a beauty event whose raison d’etre was to have its candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of Mother Earth.

The contestants who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals who participate in the competitions to advance their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.
Miss WorldIn 1951 Eric Morley had been working for the Mecca Group for almost five years. It had been, in many ways, a tough time for everyone; the Second World War had ended only six years previously, but Eric had the foresight to see the new mood of optimism that was starting to sweep the country. At the time, he was managing the Lyceum Ballroom in the Strand and, when it was announced that the Festival of Britain was being held on the South Bank, just across the Thames, he began to wonder how he could capitalise on this huge event which was taking place virtually on his doorstep. He realised that the answer was simple - he would encourage visitors to the Festival of Britain, to cross Waterloo Bridge, by hosting a beauty contest at his dancehall. Not just any old beauty contest though; this competition had to be on par with the celebrations taking place on the South Bank and so he came up with the ambitious idea of finding the most beautiful woman in the world. And so Miss World was born. A competition that has grown into one of the world's biggest and most loved events.Who could have guessed that it would also become one of the country's biggest generators of money for children's charities? It has now raised an incredible $250,000,000 thanks to the theme "Beauty with a Purpose," that was created by Julia Morley 25 years ago. This incredible success is largely because of the extremely strong and popular Miss World brand that has developed over the last 53 years - success that can be measured, by the fact that Miss World is now franchised in more than 140 countries.
