Influences: Township center a safe haven for teens VOICE OF THE PEOPLEWith the recent criticism of the Penn Township Teen Center, one wonders how far negative politicians will go. This safe and popular place draws teens from the streets, and provides them a venue for expression through art, music, dance, poetry or constructive interaction with friends. The teens also raise money for charities. They are a source of positive energy. Staff helps direct these young minds to become productive members of our community. We must adjust our priorities. Wouldn't it be better to build a teen center in every community than to continue building more jails? There must be a proactive approach to violence in and out of our schools. While the center is not the total answer, it recognizes issues teens face and provides them an alternate outlet for expression. In 2006, the tax rate for the Center was 0.0022 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. If your house was assessed at $100,000 your annual tax for the center would be $2.20. Compare that to $103.80 in the Roseland recreation fund, $137.70 in Mishawaka and $17.20 in St. Joseph County. Community participation and support should decide the center's fate, not political rhetoric. The center serves more than 150 young people per week.
