Vicious Starfish is a four-piece new progressive pop-rock band based out of Salt Lake City. The band’s history began when Austin Merkley (guitar and lead vocals) and his brother Nathan Merkley (drums, keyboard, vocals) started writing and playing their own songs together, with hopes in mind of recruiting other local musicians to start a full band. In June 2007, ex-Dirty Copper member Justin Carrell (bass and vocals) and Doug Radunich (keyboard, drums, vocals) were recruited, making the lineup complete and ready to focus on not only practicing and performing songs already written by Austin and Nathan, but also to focus on writing and performing new material together as a band. As of now the band continues to write new songs and expand their musical boundaries, and one can pick out traces of artists such as the Beatles, Radiohead, Muse, Weezer, the Strokes, Oasis, Blur, Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Folds Five, Depeche Mode, and the Killers (add or take away any bands you want) in their variety of songs that tend to range from style to style.
Since their beginning, Vicious Starfish has played several shows at local Salt Lake area venues such as Kilby Court, Solid Ground Café and the Outer Rim, and a five-song EP, titled “Don’t Think About the Color Red,†has also been issued by the band. Austin, Nathan, Justin and Doug look forward to playing even more shows and expanding their fan base, and a full-length album from the band is expected to be due out sometime during 2008. Rock On!
