Way back when I was in high school I spent a lot of time writing lyrics and was inspired by MCs such as Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, etc. to keep raising the bar with lyricism. My notebooks for class all ended up being rhyme books and had more lyrics than notes. This was something that I usually kept on the low because it was simply a hobby of being creative with words at the time. At the same time back then throughout my last couple of years of high school I got into DJing and was spinning at a lot of local parties and gigs in Westchester, NY. I soon connected with this other cat from around my way who was an MC and was looking to record some demos so we hooked up and started recording demo tapes in my crib of him spitting over instrumentals from records I had and me being his DJ. We made a lot of tapes back then which got me into a zone of picking up the mic myself for some of the tapes and I quickly fell in love with it.
After high school I started going to college for a little while and soon had to withdraw due to problems with financial aid. This left me confused and forced to just go out into the workplace. Me and the cat I used to record demos with kinda drifted apart into our own things and I continued recording demos on my own. Soon I got mad nice with spittin and was looking for cats who made beats. There weren't too many around my way in Westchester who did this so I tried to hook up with whoever I can connect find. Soon this became a hassle because many of these cats would be full of shit when it came to simple things like sticking to appointments that we set for doing sessions or their beats were horrible lol. So I said fuck it and started researching equipment for making beats from music books, magazines and made a bunch of trips to different music stores and soon started buying my own equipment. I bought a Yamaha drum machine and an Akai sampler and just grinded day and night with these machines for months until I soon reached a level of skill to make me start rhyming over my own shit. Throughout the time that I was learning to get better with this equipment I was still recording mad demos and started giving them out to mad people, but I wouldn't spit over my own beats until I reached a level in which I thought for sure that I can definitely hold my own with other producers out there on wax. After this I just got into the rhythm of just writing and recording songs on the regular and also started recording with a few cats from around the way in the mid to late 90s. Soon I just had mad songs and started really getting serious with the music. I started grinding like crazy making a ridiculous amount of trips back and forth to the city for shows, networking, etc. I recorded promos for Hot 97's morning show, was on shows like the Hank Love and Half Pint radio show (105.9FM - before the latin cats took over that station lol), etc. Also, on this same 105.9 station, I became part of an underground radio show for a quick minute called the Trifecta (shout out to Eddy Up!). I was a co-host and DJ on that show. My music grind was so much that I was seriously looking into putting out my own music independently on wax. While this situation was in the works I suddenly was hit with a big decision to make. A chance to go back to school came about because every now and then I would look into what it would take to return and how I would be able to do it and handle it financially. From a bunch of talks I had with financial counselors I realized that I might be able to do it afterall. The only problem was that it would be nearly impossible to go ALL OUT with school AND go ALL OUT with music at the same time....along with working a job. I thought long and hard about everything...and came to the decision of giving up the music to study. It was one of the hardest decisions I ever made in my life. So that's what I did. However...although I came to this decision I CONTINUED to write lyrics so that I would never lose the talent that I worked so hard to build.
FAST FORWARD!!! LOL
Now I live in NYC (Brooklyn) and for a couple of years I've DJed at many spots throughout NYC along with performing with a couple of groups on stage as their DJ (Zoned Out, Day Laborers, etc.). I also connected with a cat named Majesty who I first worked with to do video work for him as he did a ridiculous amount of live shows all over NYC as well as out of state. These things alone sparked up a hunger that I hadn't felt in a while for doing my thing again with the music. The one thing that put me over the edge and back into the music full swing was meeting a cat named Skammadix. Skammadix, who is now one of my best friends, is an unbelievably dope beatmaking cat who's tracks got me mad open about spitting again. He began creating a buzz on the underground from the tracks he made and soon began planning a producer album (Amongst Kings) that would feature the best on the underground such as Ill Bill, Q-Unique, Immortal Technique, Sean Price, Reef the Lost Cauze, etc. From having talks on creating this album I offered to help with any DJing that was needed for tracks. But once he learned that I was an MC he insisted on me spitting on the album too. I simply agreed because I knew that lyrically I can contribute to it and still hold my own with no problem regardless of who else was on there. Once I got in the booth again to lay down my verse for the album...it was a wrap from there! There was no way I was gonna let that be it for me with the music. So with that said...I'm back! LOL
At the moment me and Skammadix (who's also workin with Jedi Mind Tricks, Reef the Lost Cauze, Sabac, etc. right now) are experimenting on some "golden era/underground" type of shit you miss in Hip Hop, reminiscent of an MC spittin' over raw, hard beats along with DJ skillz to stab your eardrums with. We've been experimenting in the studio and are working on a project that will hopefully be out by early 2008 with a couple of singles released between now and then. So far, I've leaked a joint called, "Plain and Simple" produced by another cat named The Avid Record Collector and have been getting airplay on a few underground Hip Hop radio shows througout the U.S., Canada and Japan (yes, Japan-I'm as shocked as you are lol). I've also just started doing shows for the new material and look forward to hitting as many stages as possible as we continue banging out more material and more material in the lab. More info coming soon at MRBEATZ.COM !
Lastly, I recently started up another website ( www.NYCWEBGUY.com ) and it will be used to promote the web design that I do. It will be launched very soon and I felt it was necessary with the projects that I have at the moment. You can check out a sample at WWW.SABACRED.COM , which is the official site for Sabac Red of Non Phixion. Anyone interested in info on having a site done can hit me up at [email protected].
