Aside from listening to Mom's Spanish music (while she cleaned the house), Scarred IV Life [SIVL] listened to Jazz, Blues, and Old School. When Hip Hop hit the landscape- it was a whole 'nother level!
Like most inner City kids, this new culture was strictly for them. Even though tha South Bronx gave birth to this Art, it eventually found a second home on the West Coast. Breakdancing and B-boy stands were signature trademarks throughout the streets.
By the age of 12, SIVL was DJ'ing backyard parties and school dances. With crates and crates of vinyl, some 12" records had instrumentals. The timid "mess around" freestyles soon developed style and technique. SIVL and crew were spittin' on the mic and hittin' other schools for battles. At 21, SIVL was in open mic's, backyard gigs, and battle raps (as Gangstarr would say) - just to get a rep.
Every weekend, East Oakland was the spot with tha homies. As SIVL got deep in his craft, he was going to open mics and clubs in Sacramento, San Pablo, Berkeley, San Francisco, San Jose,..... Tha Yay!
Insatiable with Hip Hop and his new style, instrumentals weren't enough. Little by little, keyboards and studio gear was bought. The self-taught producer was starting to understand music on a different level.
Currently Scarred IV Life owns and controls his record label and studio.
"...nothing's overnight and in the past 7 years I've learned so much about this music industry and myself. It ain't about battle rappin' in some backyard anymore. I'm lookin' to make this my lifestyle now. But for the love of Hip Hop, I still flip the freestyles for my fam and Hip Hop heads when I rock the spot. It's all love....it always has been."
