Headphones & Hindsight

A story you can tell all of your friends...

About Me

Coming out of Nashville, Tennessee, the music of Headphones & Hindsight is not the typical country sound for which the city is known, but rather a huge step in the opposite direction. The band name, a play on words, implies a deeper connection that music supplies.
“The term ‘Headphones & Hindsight’ is really my way of saying how I view music in general,” Chris starts. “That gift of listening to music by yourself when the day is over and going over in your head exactly what you’ve been through and where you want to go.”
Consisting solely of Chris Killian, Headphones & Hindsight is a personal music project he decided to embrace after some of his close friends heard a few of his songs and insisted he pursue a musical career.
“I never actually intended for anyone to hear my music,” Chris explains. “It was more or less something personal I wrote to help me sort through my own thoughts and feelings.”
And that’s exactly what Chris did, writing a whirlwind of emotional songs he considers “journal entries”.
Utilizing soft acoustic riffs layered with piano melodies and subtle synthesizers mixed with deeply personal lyrics, Headphones & Hindsight is the kind of soft rock music that can completely change your mood from song to song. Chris’ music touches on everything from the intricacies of falling in love to loneliness and isolation to dealing with the pain caused by the death of his father.
“I always loved the way that some songs can take you back to a particular time in your life,” Chris says. “But there were periods where I couldn’t find a song that really resonated with the way I was feeling, so I just started writing my own. It was a therapeutic way for me to envelope certain moments of my life I wanted to revisit when I was alone.”
Since late 2004, Chris has been hard at work writing music and integrating sounds and styles that influenced him from some of his favorite bands growing up including The Cure, Bush, Coldplay, Duncan Sheik, and many others.
“In high school I played with a couple of bands and used to write lyrics, but I never knew how to play any instruments (other than dabbling a little on the piano). My friends would write the music and I would just sing. Then I started college, and I didn’t have any one to play music with so I bought a cheap guitar for about twenty-five bucks and started teaching myself how to play.”
Teaching himself to play in his dorm would prove influential to his sound because, as he explains it, there weren’t supposed to be any instruments played in the rooms, so he learned to play quietly without a guitar pick so he could practice.
After several years of honing his skills, Headphones & Hindsight have been released for mass consumption.
“I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have it,” Chris finishes. “It gets me through the day. If it can do that for anyone else, I’m flattered.”
