“Music keeps me sane, I smile from the outside but I write from within.â€-J Killz.Born in Oxford, North Carolina, Killz would earn his alias through his competitiveness where he always “killed the competition.†While his high performance in sports would lead many to believe it to be his ultimate goal, his heart would deem otherwise. Being the lead singer in one of the top North Carolina choirs and having the opportunity to be looked on by numerous labels dominating the 80’s, Denise, Killz’s mother put her aspirations aside to raise a family. Finding that spark and love for the art form that she once had in her son, she supported and surrounded Killz with music to makeup for her lost dream. Marvin Gaye, Biggie, James Brown, Nas, Aretha Franklin, and Q Tip just to name a few would blare through the 2 bedroom apartment his family of 5 would call home. Writing his first song at age 8, Killz found this talent to be more than just a hobby but instead an ambition. Over the years many battles, open mics, and concerts opening up for the like of Nappy Roots, Wu-Tang, and Dipset would ensue. Though Killz would dominate the battle scene leaving his challengers enraged at his honest yet brutal comebacks, Killz does not define himself as a battle rapper but instead as songwriter with memorable and captivating words. While he entered the world in the clay dirt streets of the south he would later find his new home in the snowy New England region. This nomadic action would contribute to his understanding of a variety of people but even better his lyrical presence and his versatility on the mic.
