Mothers Against Violence (MAV) is a voluntary group comprised of mothers who have been affected in some way by gun violence. We seek to work with young men and their families to promote positive change in communities that have been affected by gun violence. Our ultimate aim is to affect change in our community by building and developing young people’s perception of who they are, and what they have to offer. We aim to empower them to have a greater ownership of their lives and the choices they make.

I'd like to meet:

(The "Against The Violence - The Bigger Picture" Documentary, can be viewed in the above Link)Since the late 1980; s Manchester has been afflicted by gun crime and to date over 47 young men have been murdered. In 1999 M.A.V was formed, this was as a direct result of the community being affected by four gun shootings in one week, which resulted in two fatalities.A meeting was held and mothers from across the South Manchester area met to discuss how we as a community could stop these senseless killings and deter our children from the illusion of gang culture and gun crime. This was a very significant time and the community was moved, mothers continued to meet and as a result M.A.V was born.M.A.V has worked tirelessly and fiercely to raise awareness and bring together communities and agencies in an attempt to address this issue.June 2001 saw a community response in these which hundreds of residents marched throughout the city in protest to death accruing from gun crime, which incurred local and national interest. M.A.V was invited to attend a closed meeting with Tony Blair to highlight our concerns and discuss ways of moving forward.Unfortunately others cities began to experiences the debilitating effects of gun crime. M.A.V was contacted to meet and support group to share our experiences in an attempt to address gun crime. M.A.V have developed some strong alliances and work closely with other mothers whom have lost the children as a direct result of gun crime, we now have regional links with Birmingham, London, Nottingham, Huddersfield and Leeds.By forming such strong alliances our voices and views are now being heard. Our commitment and determination to see change within our community has led M.A.V to work tirelessly and with very limited resources to engage with young people within our community.
