CURSES!

About Me

Blending Horror/Sci-Fi themes and an retro-groove approach to songwriting, Curses! is Toronto's most honestly heavy bands. They are not TRYING to be loud and intense, they just naturally ooze it from every pore. Let me explain: ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------- In the winter of 2001 these 5 lads would find themselves huddled in a lightly-insulated jam garage watching Hockey Night in Canada and adding their own soundtrack. As a result of the ultra-low Canadian temperatures they would have to play with extra vigour to keep warm. While Zeke and Torso came from a long line of Heavy Metal loving hellraising rednecks, the remaining members Jim, Yuke, and Turd were raised with a more refined, and let's say more diverse taste in all music. The temperatures (and groupies) went down while the volume and energy went up up UP! It was a short while before they changed their name (Team Sh!tstorm) into the more suitable Curses! and decided that this force of Space Rock was too huge to be confined to a small garage, and interrupted by numerous Don Cherry segments. This is where the phenomenon of the Curses! live show began to spread. Curses! has since become a surprisingly highly attended event whenever it rolls into town. Fans are instantly attracted to the honestly delivered pomp and spectacle, despite the absence of distracting lights and lasers, costumes and/or frivolous gimmicks. The more devoted Curses! followers have been dubbed Curses! Soldiers, or "CS'ers" by their benevolent hosts. It is pure blood, sweat, energy and passion, that hits home with enthusiastic crowds. ------------------------------------------------------- In 2006 Curses! released it's first 5-song EP entitled "I AM LEGEND" independently under their own micro-label A Elf Records. -------------------------- Track 1:Where's Your Savior Now? is a Who sized mini-epic with a rollicking beat and haunting vocals, which climbs to a mesmerizing crescendo with a double-guitar solo and soul-shattering scream. The lyrics deal with the issue of losing a loved one, and how caring and understanding from a friend can help quell the perils of depression and suicide. ----------------------------------------- Track 2:I Am Legend, the title track starts with a clunky southern beat, mutates into a hammering charge of a bridge and soars into an acid soaked pleading chorus "I am legend here, take me away" as if to firmly establish dominance and then pray for deliverance. Inspired by the classic horror novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, the lyrics describe the alienation of being different from the world around you, and the humor, bravado, and loneliness that comes with dealing with yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------ - Track 3:Never Trust an Elf. Tolkienology and D+D rule at least a fraction of all Sci-Fi/Horror fans minds. This psychedelic yarn starts off slow and mystical for at least a full minute and a half before the stoner-rock beat crushes in. Doomy vocals slowly and methodically weave a web of warning until the chorus cuts through the fog, proclaiming the power of the 12-sided dice. Roll the dice, test your fate... ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ Track 4:Cave of the G.D. Wendigo starts with a wild, blizzardly wind that ushers in the Polar-Rock anthem that is one of Curses!' signature songs. What starts as a fun weekend of sport hunting turns into a hairy, 10 foot tall, man-hunt. Harrowing warnings lace descending riffs and stuttering guitar licks. There's no happy ending here, folks! ------------------------------------------------------------ -- Track 5:Take Flight ends this oddessey on a hopeful note. Classic rock guitars and assured vocals prompt you to have hope, have fun, flex your biceps and shake your ass. In the words of a wise man named Donny: "Use what you got, live by what you see." ------------------------------------------------------------ ----- Curses!' I AM LEGEND EP was given only one printing and is selling out fast. So you better go see Curses! live and pick one up ASAP, because once they are gone, they're never coming back! ----------------------------------------------------*GASP!!! * DID YOU KNOW?: Curses! is a band that maintains their ORIGINAL 5 MEMBERS!! BEHOLD!: ------------------------------------------------------------ ------ JIM FREEDOM!Bassist Jim Freedom's musical roots stem mostly from folk/classic rock/psychedelic fare, spearheading many accomplished rock acts in and around Toronto. ------------------------------------------------------------ ----- TURD FURGESON!Drummer Turd Furgeson was a leader of a nationally-competing drum corps for the better part of a decade, as well as drumming in many a rock/jazz/blues band along the way. ---------------------------------------- BIG YUKE!Guitarist Yuke travelled the world, contributing to and soaking in a ridiculous amount of world music, becoming one of the most globally well-rounded musicians/songwriters that one could hope to find. ----------------------- TORSO GIALLO!Vocalist Torso has been sharpening his soaring and abrasive Hard Rock arsenal for a decade and a half, influenced by a wide range of show-stopping, story-telling vocalists and performers. ------------------------------------ ZEKE F'N PICKLEMAN!Steering the ship is guitarist Zeke. Even with his lifelong love of Heavy Metal he has maintained an amazing appreciation for the songwriting styles of Trance, Folk, and Pop Music, infusing them into each and every Curses! composition. This and his uncanny mutant ability to make and maintain friendships is indeed the glue that keeps all 5 original members of Curses! together. ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------- You should create your own MySpace Layouts like me by using nUCLEArcENTURy .COM's MySpace Profile Editor !
