I'd like to meet:

psycho musicians. in the tradition of pure cathartic excessive expression. challenging and creative people. people who are active. people who are shocking and hilarious. malcolm x. baldwin. bjork. abdullah ibrahim. for a piano lesson.

dudu pukwana, cuban pianists, k-naan the dusty foot philosopher, outkast, AACM, albert ayler, d'angelo, eddie palmieri, ornette coleman, mystikal (the rhythm), fela kuti, revolutionary rap, BLACK BLONDIE [www.myspace.com/blackblondiemusic], Hips Don't Lie [www.myspace.com/ourhipsdontlie], afro beat songs that last at least 45 minutes

Movies:

Books:

assata shakur's autobiography. her life.

'the white boy shuffle' by paul beatty. it's nasty and funny and historically apt and sardonic as hell.

'kaffir boy,' by Mark Mathabane. it's about the author's experiences growing up under apartheid in south africa.

'dogeaters' by jessica hagedorn- it takes place in the phillipines and is told rather hilariously and hysterically from several people's perspectives.

'bulletproof diva: tales of race, sex and hair' by Lisa Jones.

vonnegut's 'slaughterhouse 5' is another favorite.

i LOVE zadie smith, alice walker [the Temple of My Familiar has been my favorite book since I was in junior high], aaron mcgruder.

the Autobiography of Malcolm X, though it's hard to think of it as being a book.

i dig writers who make me sweat, laugh, and feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Heroes:

alice walker, malcolm X, obama, kucinich, thelonious monk, mom
