Fresno Bee: Top Five Picks
Many thanks to John Jordan, Marcel Nunis, Stephen Mintz, Noa Kristi, Jaguar Bennett, Sarah, Solitaire, Jayne, Devon, Blake, the Rogue volunteers, and especially the amazing Fresno Roguers!
"This is a show that you must see. Mia Paschal communicates directly with her audience, effortlessly expresses an incredible range of emotions, exploring every aspect of her character. In an eyeblink, she moves from weeping despair to fiery defiance, from the depths of defeat to who gives a f*** insouciance. She's awesome. See it now." - Jaguar Bennett
"This show is serious business. Shot through with intense personal confession and executed with pitch-perfect precision.....Mia Paschal's performance is a beautiful, wondrous thing. DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!" - pc munoz
"This is an absolutely riveting experience. I can't say enough about the absolutely seamless way this story is told through various voices, all by one woman.I found myself alternately identifying with and marveling incredulously at the moods and emotions that carried me through this hour. There are so many wonderful things to see at the Rogue... but this is definitely in my top three recommendations, without question. We are lucky to have the chance to see it here. LUCKY, I tell you." - Joy, of Ananka Bellydance
"...the show is strong and moving. Paschal is a tough, triumphant presence. And the best thing is: She's still here.” – Donald Munro, The Fresno Bee
"Some of my best friends are plays by black women..." - Barry Smith
I recently made my songwriting debut at the DIVAfest Cabaret , which is part of the EXIT Theatre's DIVAfest 2007, featuring Bay Area singers and songwriters Alison Bloomfield, Lua Hadar, Mia Paschal, Janet Roitz, Amy Tobin, Diane Valory and poet Pireeni Sundaralingam. Original musical compositions by Don Seaver at the piano and Otto Huber on percussion. MC’d by the ever sassy & seductive Sean Owens.
A review of the DIVAfest Cabaret from the SF Weekly...
The true star of the show, though, is first-time lyricist Mia Paschal. Using a broad range of styles, Paschal has no trouble transitioning from a scorching ballad titled "You Don't Love Me Yet", to the finale — a fun alphabetical tirade bashing men with lines like "P is for the prick who texted me goodbye." — Nathaniel Eaton
And a song...
You Don’t Love Me Yet
moonlight long behind me and so here I am again
drowning in tequila and the eyes of dreamwrecked men
a train cuts through the city its whistle blowing far
silence melts and sharpens the light behind the bar
faces fade away now tangled voices in their wake
praying that the sunlight will erase my last mistake
bitter laughter suits you and the darkness even more
turning round to kiss me in the shelter of the door
it may never happen but for a moment yes it was
revolving round each other for a moment just because
you don’t love me yet but maybe once you did
you don’t love me yet maybe you never will
caught within the thorned walls of desire and distaste
crushing darkened memories to impale our hearts in place
night gave voice to small truths blind and silent in the day
and sunlight finds us tangled in a sleep-unveiled embrace
stranger hands have held me and much kinder lies were told
kinder hands will hurt me and much stranger truths unfold
drowning in dark memories of all the men before
and the train rides on its dying song cuts me to the core
it may never happen but for a moment yes it was
revolving round each other for a moment just because
you don’t love me yet but maybe once you did
you don’t love me yet maybe you never will
stranger hands have held me and much kinder lies were told
kinder hands will hurt me and much stranger truths unfold
drowning in dark memories of all the men before
and the train rides on its dying song strands me here once more
