Here is a summed up account for what medically has happened to Frank:
With what was just a broken femur all went south with fevers of unknown origin. He ended up on life support for 40 days and while he was on life support his lungs shut down ARDS Acute Respiratory Syndrome only 50% survive this.
His immune system plummeted overnight without a known cause he went through "Mylosupression" where his immune system was dangerously suppressed.
He went through what is called "Thrombocytopenian" (low platelets)which dropped to 35,000 normal range is 150,000-400,000 he had to have several blood transfusions and platelet transfusions.
Neutropenia low white counts his were 0.4 (400) normal range 4000-10,000, white cells can't be transfused there is no ideal therapy for neutropenia, but recombinant G-CSF (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, which did help the white counts rise slowly.
"Dissiminated Intravascular Coagulation" DIC known as Death is Coming, (bleeding out all orifices). We were told most people do not pull through DIC.
Septic Shock without a cause known as SIRS Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome is an inflammatory state of the whole body (the "system") without a proven source of infection. It is a serious medical condition.
In the beginning he was too unstable to be transferred to a larger hospital, 20 days later on life support he became stable enough to be transferred, he was taken off the vent and a tracheotomy was performed and he was then medevaced over to a large hospital.
He has had several procedures and 6 surgeries on his leg most of which were not necessary the doctors wanted to blame the leg for all that was happening but it WAS NEVER the leg! All these surgeries ended up doing was cause infection, excessive bone growth ossification at the hip, and unnecessary massive scars. His original internal rod was removed and replaced with an external fixator which is still in place. He is still in need for surgery to have this removed, which in itself is another risk.
During the length of his hospital stay we found out that he was allergic to three different antibiotics, one that almost killed him, another that made his vision go, and other that gave him a rash.
End result he left the hospital 3 months later when he should of only been in there for 5 days max recovering form broken femur, but somewhere down the line only God knows what went wrong, and who messed up as there was much negligence prior to the life support and in his after care.
He left with sever nerve damage in both legs and feet with drop toe both of his big toes drop thus causing pain and the need for heavy narcotics to deal with the pain. His inability to walk with his toes like this and when he stands his legs turn black and purple.Another traumatic event that took place was he lost all of his beautiful long hair that was down to his waist, he went bald we suspect it was due to the mylosupression when his immune system was extremely compromised. I finally had to just shave it all off, but thank God he is blessed it is growing back.
Frank came home on April 5th was home barley 2 days and ended up back in the ER, he screamed for 22 straight hours in extreme torturous pain, which turned out to be his gallbladder, he had to have emergency gallbladder removal he stayed another week in the hospital then came home on the 12th of April.
While so much more went on but due to limited space and your time I have tried to sum it up as best as I can.
Frank was given probation for having the belt buckle that was a replica of brass knuckles. The day of his accident the officers confiscated this. Apparently in the state of Michigan it is a Felony to own or have brass knuckle in any shape or form regardless if in fact it is a belt buckle.
Just to show all of you the cause of the felony charges, what it is he actually had
CCS Skate Magazine sells this exact Belt Buckle!
He has no priors whatsoever yet the prosecutor is still charging him with a felony.
We never raised enough money to obtain a lawyer so we went with the court appointed one and boy was he ever young. He was ok and spoke highly of Frank and got him in a program to where the charges could be dropped.
UPDATE: On Dec 18 2008 Franks 21st Birthday he was read his charges they gave him probation for 1yr and placed him in a program called HYITA. This is available to those under 21 who have never been in trouble. One who is in thie program must not violate probation or get in any trouble or the original charges stick if not then all charges are dropped expunged.
