The Fly Brothers

Great Music, Great Fly Fishing

About Me

The Fly Brothers are a funk/reggae/rock band with twist of jazz, born on an idea that good people, good music, and fly fishing could be fused together to form a great sound. With Justin and Stephen fly tying and fishing EVERY chance they get, a kinship was formed and the two friends discussed their brainchild. The resulting band combined many talents on the stage, and one that engaged in their passion of fly fishing off stage. There is no denying of the talent on stage at a Fly Bro show. Justin Powell holds the bottom on bass for the Fly Bros. Band. With over ten years of touring experience with touring bands Justin adds his truly unique flair of melodic and even percussive bass lines to the show. Being a very bass driven band really puts Justin up front where he belongs. Justin's former experience includes, Tallahassee's GLASS, Destin, Florida's SPACE MEDICINE, Georigia's Tony Tyler Band, and heavy rockers like Geoff Achison, and Donna Hopkins.

Stephen Hendrix has been playing guitar for 4 years. He was heavily influenced by gospel music at a young age, as his family was in a gospel group. He was exposed to a variety of music throughout his childhood, having been raised by a music-loving parent. On a daily basis, he heard everything from the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan to Leo Kottke and Elvis. He played for a church rock band, and later joined the Tony Tyler Trance, where he met and played with the Fly Brothers founding member, Justin Powell. The chemistry between Justin and Stephen was undeniable. The two bonded on a personal and professional level, and spent considerable time together touring. Justin and Stephen learned of each other’s love of Fly fishing, and spent most of their spare time on the road fishing. Once they decided to create their own band, the band named itself …the Fly Brothers.
Scott Phillips started playing drums in Drum and Bugle Corps. at the age of nine in the wilds of Wisconsin. Since then he’s played in the occasional symphony and a butt load of rock, blues, fusion, pop, and jam bands. Scott has toured the southeast for the last two years with the Wayside Riders.
Ben Farmer has been a working musician in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Boston for the last 10 years. He is a graduate from Berklee College of Music and a native Atlantan. Some of his past projects include Mike Willis and the Escape Artists, Alicia Champion, and Portrait of the Artist. He also plays guitar in Atlanta band Moon Goddess Cotillion and teaches private music lessons.

Sounds Like: From MountainFreak.net:

The Fly Brothers are an Atlanta based band who, in the words of bassist/lead singer Justin Powell, "Love to play in the mountains every chance they get". They make the trip to play at Wylie’s on a fairly regular basis in between dates all over the southeast. Joining Justin are lead guitarist Stephen Hendrix, drummer Scott Phillips, and Ben Farmer providing a second guitar and background vocals. The Fly Brothers create a sound that is hard to pin down-On this evening I heard the influences of reggae, funk, jazz, rock, bluegrass and even hip-hop within the first two sets. The guys worked off each other seamlessly to create a unique and energetic sound that is built around Powell’s excellent 6 string bass foundation and vocals. This is fun music played by talented musicians..they can take you from jazz to reggae to bluegrass and back again within the space of minutes, all the while keeping the crowd into it and involved. I was able to speak briefly with the band members between sets. They come across as nice, affable guys who love what they are doing and were happy to be there. That comes across in their music.
