About Me

Speckworks is home to the productions and collaborations of John Speck. All work is copyrighted, but feel free to contact us if interested in licensing, sampling, stealing, or rocking our work for the free world.
This is also the home of Tropical Funk Ensemble, THE BACON BITS, (ya soon know!!):
The Bacon Bits was born from the greasy depths of the imagination of John Speck before he was drawn into a full time 5-year stint as cowriter, cofrontman, trombonist, dancer, backup singer with Miami's own Spam Allstars. Never content to listen to one kind of music, Speck had begun composing a cornucopia of songs and beats on sampler and 4 track in Seattle in 1998. His ever expanding palette of interests continued to grow after a move to Miami Beach in 2000 and the solidification of La Tocineria, (the bacon factory). The Bacon Bits' first gigs were played in a variety of low and high brow establishments in the Miami area including Macabi cigar bar, Big Fish Miami and the historic Friday night residency at the Design District's 190 restaurant/art gallery.During their stint at 190 the lineup reached it's largest numbers with sometimes 12 to 14 freaks onstage. Folks like: Smurphio, Bryan Smith, Jesse Jackson, DJ Safe Stadick, DJ Snowhite, DJ Spam, "Lil Ray" Romero, Lazaro Alfonso, A.J. Hill, Mercedes Abal, Tomas Diaz, The Rice and Beans Girls, Alan Reyna, Sam Hoyt.Buffalo Brown would become a permanent fixture and cofrontman at 190. A solid cheerful voice and a Real Mofo of a guitar player, Buffalo would always have the groove-based answer to Tocino's greasy-tropical funk variations. He also sings mean "segundo" with his beautiful harmonies.Who else is there? Well, you've got family man of Kermit Ruffin's band and New Orleans' Klezmer Allstars fame, the New Orleans native, Arthur Kastler on the deep groovin' bass lines. Claudio Cruz a reputed tenor player from New York who has played and toured with Locos Por Juana and Poquito's Reggae Explosion, Sam Levine is the master of the controlled chaos of yogic drumming, whose sticks have graced the stage with so many magnificent Miami and New York outfits.
So MAKE it out to see these guys live. Studio recordings never catch the live show like what it is. The Bacon Bits are currently based in Miami, Florida where they play weekly gigs in between grease-staining missions to various metropolises. The first full-length record, Mofongo, is now available at independent record stores and on the web worldwide. ..
