Who is John Speck “el tocino trombone�
Think Willie Colon born to a British mother on a pirate houseboat in San Francisco bay.
Speck is a true World Citizen. At age 17 he left high school to build latrines and do volunteer work in Mexico. At 21 he spent 4 months studying trombone in Cuba, the instrument he had fallen in love with in 3rd grade after hearing how it could make Indie 500 sounds“Vroooom, Vrooooooom.
Over the next 20 years, he would fastidiously master the instrument and grace the projects of Phish’s Page McConnell, Bacilos Latin pop super group, Ricky Martin, and a host of others as he toured internationally.
Also a prolific composer and songwriter, John began producing music for television during his 3 year stint at Cisneros Television Group in Miami. This position would acquaint him with production software, and enable him to release his own group, The Bacon Bits’, first record “Mofongoâ€. Now available worldwide in Virgin Megastore, on Itunes and at Amazon.com.
Yet it was his dedication to always put soul over ego, that would allow John or “el tocino†as they called him during his 5 year commitment to The Spam Allstars. He quickly noticed that this unique collective of “electronic descarga†enthusiasts were fulfilling an important role for the young generation of Cuban Americans. He chose to cowrite and support this crucible of Latin Funk and watershed for so many musicians in Miami which became the now legendary night called “Fuacataâ€. This three year residency would result in a Live CD, Grammy nomination and many spin off collaborations with world class musicians of the several generations.
Of late, Speck has been collaborating with the renowned contemporary Dadaist, Pablo Cano. An acclaimed marionette maker, Cano has shown his work at Lincoln Center and has been working closely with Speck as they develop the soundtrack for this fall’s performance “Viva Vaudevilleâ€.
The Bacon Bits still play exclusive engagements, and there are rumors of a solo project celebrating the legacy of a Greek sailor and the Northwest passage.
