Influences: Some may be more obvious than others, but they all go into the roiling pot that is our creative psyche. Bowie, Reed, Waits, Cohen, Cale, Cave, Pop, Lennon & McCartney and Morrison are all there. Tindersticks, Flaming Lips, Bauhaus and The Fall can probably be found, too, as well as less ostensibly "cool" bands: Rush, Yes, Crimson and Genesis; Priest, Maiden and KISS. God bless metal and prog. Then there are our meager attempts to channel the complexity and beauty of Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. And, of course, there are the writers and poets: Artaud, Rimbaud, Poe, Kafka, Faulkner and Dick. And T.S. Monk and Mingus. And Orson Welles and Kubrick. And David Lynch... Weill... Morricone...
Sounds Like: Velvets, Bowie, Neil Diamond's "12 Songs", Tindersticks without all the gorgeous strings, Cave and the Bad Seeds, Scott Walker, Peter Hammill, a less mainstream Coldplay, a more mainstream Radiohead (okay, maybe that's wishful thinking...), Elton John on downers, Leonard Cohen on uppers... This is what we've heard: "Bauhaus on piano," "A male Patti Smith," "A drunk Leonard Cohen," "Somewhere between Axl Rose and David Bowie," "Hey Will, you sound like Neil Diamond!" Which is, of course, a compliment.

Notes on "Sweet Devotion"

SWEET DEVOTION was co-written by Bort Schrader (music) and me (music, lyrics). Bort had come up with this striking piano part based around an E major and backed by a sinewy bassline and groovy dr...

Notes on "Magic Show" and "Cancer Carnival"

Forced into a small bedroom posing as a run-down music studio in Portland, OR, Elliott and I tried to make something musical happen with the barest of tools (old G3, no midi interface or sound card, t...
