Why “hardclash” innovator JP Anderson said no to major label deals and then eventually quit his ragingly successful digital hardcore act The Shizit is just one of many unsolved mysteries around his music career.
JP is an artist with ideas all his own about music, politics, and creative direction. The Shizit (formed in Seattle in 1999) saw hundreds of thousands of downloads, most notably the slamming mosh pit fave, Gak Bitch. Tracks from the band’s Full Length SoFTeR were also included on Alec Empire’s (former Atari Teenage Riot) compilation Don’t Fuck With Us.
But JP moved on. In 2004, about a year after The Shizit’s end, he began recording as Rabbit Junk. He calls the transition more of a “change of attitude” than a change of genre.
Essentially a one-man show that blends metal, punk, experimental and electronic forms, JP’s new incarnation definitely allows him more freedom. With additional vocals handled by the enigmatic Sum Grrl and support of a 5 piece live band, JP has been able to explore territory previously thought inaccessible to one man electronic acts.
While all the raging vocals, programming and single-handed electronics might be easily mislabeled “industrial,” JP is quick to correct that and point to more relevant influences like the now defunct Japanese band The Mad Capsule Markets and Black metal heroes Emperor.
“I get pigeon-holed into industrial,” he says. “And that’s not my gig at all. I just think when people hear heavy music with electronic music, they think industrial. I’m probably just going to live with that for a while.”
Rabbit Junk is aggressive and unpredictable, a mix of politics, angst and humor delivered on a wave of pounding noise. JP calls it “hardclash,” an avant-garde spirit that rages against the relatively primitive grind of his earliest death metal and grindcore influences.
In the short time since its start, Rabbit Junk has been prolific, contributing tracks to two compilation CDs, Hordes of the Elite (Glitch Mode Recordings) and a tribute to Atari Teenage riot called The Virus Has Been Spread (D-Trash Records). The band released a self-titled debut in 2004. The full-length REframe followed in 2006 and was re-released on Full Effect Records in 2007.
2008 will see the release of Rabbit Junk’s third and most ambitious effort yet, the three part concept album This Life Is Where You Get Fucked…. (Norene Cashen, 2007)
