What is Shizenken Martial Sciences? Our objective: To teach an effective form of martial arts to those who wish to learn in an environment that fosters leadership and martial spirit. Shizenken in Japanese translates into “natural body weapon.” This not only refers to the body as a weapon, but also the mind and the spirit unified towards the protection and safety of our friends, family and ourselves. We pride ourselves in offering quality instruction in a healthy environment that fosters excellence and leadership.

Shizenken Martial Sciences represents a system of martial arts that utilizes a unique fighting theory based upon ancient Japanese principles. These concepts and tactics have been implemented into a modern approach to personal defense and battlefield survival. We strive to incorporate historical concepts that borrow from ninjutsu traditions into unified method of modern combat. Our curriculum is set so that a practitioner grows not only in their physical skill set, but also in warrior knowledge, problem solving, and leadership ability. The techniques that are taught are measured against real world utility standards in a forum that is geared towards the development of skilled and able-bodied martial artists. Instruction takes place in a venue where questions are encouraged and attention to detail fine tunes one’s analytical facilities so that the mind becomes geared towards the protection of self.

When we speak about the Japanese traditions that we incorporate into our art, we speak of a myriad of ideas and strategies utilized by various warrior sects and societies within Feudal Japan. We are a system of unarmed combative applications that stresses limb destruction and kyusho (pressure point) manipulation, coupled with deceptive postures and footwork. These factors reduce the physical limitations of a practitioner (size, speed, strength, age). This makes the art usable for a variety of people in various walks of life. Instruction in E&E (Escape & Evasion) provides the student with skills necessary to remove themselves from a theatre of combat quickly and undetected once the engagement is over or a retreat is needed. Psychological warfare principles are combined with various factors to constantly off balance a foe even before an altercation has begun. Historical research gives a wealth of information on neutral threat elimination, low level warfare, weapon systems, spying, disruption of communications, battlefield tactics and strategy.

Our conflict management method is based on a unique paradigm based off of the Gogyo (Five Elemental Theory). Preventing an enemy from hindering your movement is a critical factor that we teach. Our teachings utilize an understanding of terrain, opposition and conditions to best deal with the task at hand. For this we bring into play the use of the “Five Elements” do deal with a situation. Each attack and defense has various properties in regard to said techniques usages. These are taught and implemented in drills so that usage becomes second nature. The concealing of movement and/or the use of movement to gain tactical advantage during combat and/or escape is the main topic of every class. Those factors coincide with the ability of a practitioner to survive an engagement with minimal injury to both the attacker and the defender. We combine hard physical conditioning and training with our study to produce one who is not only mentally alert and agile but also both strong and slippery in a combative situation.

We invite you to stop on by and try out one of our classes. We are ideal for either someone who is looking to study the arts for the first time or someone who has studied in the past and is looking to add more to the arsenal. I have included a basic FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) below to answer some of the question that you have about our classes. Please feel free to look around our website and check out some of our articles and info. I hope to see you in class soon.

Respectfully,

Shidoshi John Casey (Shibucho)

Please Note:Although we have met, trained, studied, and interacted with outside parties who also train in the arts of ninjutsu, Usagikage Ryu Gendai Shinobi-No-Jutsu has no political, official, or documentary connection to the interpretation of Ninjutsu in the Takamatsuden (known today as budo taijutsu) in Bujinkan, Genbukan, or Jinenkan.

My Interests

Usagi No Kage Ryu Gendai Shinobi-No-Jutsu

"Usagi No Kage Ryu Gendai Shinobi-No-Jutsu" roughly translates as "Rabbit Shadow School Modern Arts of Perseverance." We best describe ourselves as a modern (gendai) interpretation of Ninjutsu. This martial art was developed through careful research of root elements of the warrior arts practiced by the ancient Shinobi No Mono (ninja) of Japan. Through mastery of techniques from various Japanese martial traditions (ryuha), both modern (gendai) and old school (koryu), and understanding the importance of approaching a confrontation from a tactical level, Usagi No Kage Ryu Gendai Shinobi-No-Jutsu is a very capable system of martial arts. This art was designed to cope with a variety of single and multiple attacker scenarios as seen in the modern urban environment with the primary focus being on evasion and escape.

Developed to be a complete system of bujutsu (warrior arts), these techniques and principles are proven to greatly increase battlefield survival. Our art is a unique method of self-protection effective against single or multiple adversaries while moving through unfamiliar territory. Our main attributes are the ability to remain unhindered while making and escape, manipulating the of the mechanics of conflict, and learning how to influence these in the favor of the practitioner. Each of these elements have their own principle ways of dealing with attacks. In the same way one would play chess, these actions are brought to life when used to accomplish an objective (survival and escape). An arsenal of joint locks (kansetsu-waza), throws (jutaijutsu), strikes (daikenjutsu), breaks (koppojutsu), balance breaking (kuzushi-waza), chokes (shime-waza), and pressure point fighting (koshijutsu) enable a skilled practitioner to fend off the most determined assailants. E&E (Escape & Evasion) skills plus Battojutsu (Defensive Japanese Swordsmanship) and taught throughout the entire course of study.
This art has been developed so that techniques are harder to counter, and combat is both physically and mentally damaging to an opponent. Our art teaches how to develop combat strategy if engaged and to exit the area of combat quickly once victory has been achieved. We work from small to large circles of engagement, in both armed and unarmed modes of combat. Weapon handling as well as weapons disarming skills are taught through out the curriculum. Our art's uniqueness lies in our principle motivations and characteristic effects which identify its practice. Some of these are:

* Using a coordination of tactical based maneuvers in order to avoid, evade and escape combat. * Use of terrain to effectively alter combat in an advantageous way for the practitioner. * Evoking fear and/or clouding the judgment of an opponent in order to facilitate dissipation of opponent confidence and moral and stimulate confusion on the battlefield. * Destruction and/or control of an opponent's mobility, balance, judgment, senses and/or weapon systems in order to quickly disengage and dissipate the opponent's will to continue combat or pursuit. * A series of skill sets based on survival in hostile areas, whether it be entering, exiting, or evasion. * A multiplicity of weapon systems and weapon disarming techniques in order to increase battlefield survival and take full advantage of battlefield recovery. * A combat strategy particular to this art, the emphasis upon elemental attributes and principle traits of the art during combat to obtain victory, and the tactical applications of that strategy. * Borrowing from martial traditions that embody the spirit of combat survivability on today's modern battlefield. * Utilizing variations (henka) of many bujutsu techniques so that our techniques are not only devastating but that much harder to thwart or counter. The practice of this art is the way which a person can move from basic utilitarian consideration of learning an efficient means of self-defense, to the point where the art becomes an extension of one's own body, geared towards protecting your mind, body, and spirit under any circumstances, conditions, or cost to the aggressor's well being.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. May I visit one of your classes?
Not only is everyone allowed to visit, but are strongly encouraged to do so before deciding to join the class. Usagi No Kage Ryu may or may not be the system you are looking for. That is a question only you can answer. Also, understand that you may not be a proper fit with our class. All beginning students are accepted on a probationary basis. Please check us out before spending your hard earned money, and determine whether this school is indeed suited to you. We will be pleased to answer any of your questions. Be sure to give us notice of your visit, and we will be sure to have extra room on the mat so that you may participate in the class.

2. Once I pay to sign up for class, are there any additional expenses?
Shizenken Martial Sciences charges $80/month for classes. The only required additional expenses are for a uniform ($70) and a bokken (wood practice sword $12 to $15). If you decide after attending classes for a while that Usagi No Kage Ryu Gendai Shinobi-No-Jutsu is right for you, you may want to invest in a better quality bokken, tabi (split toe shoes for mat work and outdoor training) and other training tools. The cost of these can vary widely depending on the type and quality you decide on, and are not necessary to attend initial classes.

3. Are there any age requirements for your classes?
For the open classes, we prefer that our students be 16 and over. Exceptions can be made on an individual basis, but that is at Shidoshi’s discretion.

4. Is the training dangerous?
Yes and no. Yes, because we teach our student how to how to utilize techniques, when done at full speed and strength, that can seriously maim, injure and possibly kill an attacker. No, because we train in the safest way possible with out having to compromise the ability of the techniques. No rough housing or horse play is allowed in class. Failure to train in a safe manner will lead to dismissal from class and possible expulsion from the system. Be sure to check with your physician before beginning any exercise regimen and inform the instructor of any injuries that may prevent you from participating in certain aspects of class.

5. If I can't make it to all the classes, is that okay?
Many students have had to miss class for different reasons be they personal or business related. This is an understood hazard for these days and times. Since Usagi No Kage Ryu techniques are taught in a self paced method, any classes that you do miss will not affect your personal training. Be aware however that effective technique is learned through repetition so the more you practice, both in class and at home, the better your training will progress.

6. Do I need any martial arts experience to join your class?
No. Most of our students have had little if any previous training. The desire to learn the arts and the availability of class has encouraged those students, who would otherwise never have joined, to enter the martial arts.

7. Should I work out on my own as a precursor to joining classes?
No, our training and conditioning is done in a way to increase one’s confidence, strength and endurance. Classes provide positive motivation that will allow you to develop into a more resilient and healthier individual. Hard work and patience pays off and will show as you grow more coordinated, faster and more agile as you become more advanced.

8. Do you give private lessons?
Yes and no. Do the instructors teach individual students outside of class? No, not at this time. Do the instructors devote time to you alone during class time? Yes, especially at the beginning of your training. One must try to understand that it is difficult to instruct and act as a uke (attacker). The instructor must be able to watch your total technique and not divide his attention between instructing and getting struck at the same time. You would be more likely to get private instruction as a small group of two to four.

english translation

The essence of the Ninja spirit is fortitude:

Perseverance of mind, body and consiousness.

Endure shame, forget jealousy,

The origin is patience.

'Nin' is not placing 'blade' over 'heart' to hurt others.

'Nin' means 'kajo waraku,'

Truly strong and compassionate heart, pure as a tender flower,

Such heart shall enjoy peace.

Hence, attain the wonder of the changing strategy,

Your body shall naturally evade the opponent's sword.

In defence against the enemies of justice, society, and country,

Utilize nature's Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Air.

This is the fundamental principle of the Ninja.

Promotions and advancements

At the beginning of each kyu (grade), a list of requirements are given to each of the eligible students. These techniques, theories and strategies will studied, learned and refined in the following months. Step by step, the techniques of Usagi No Kage Ryu become more advanced, powerful and in combination, sometimes complicated. It is our art’s purpose to elevate the student’s skill level to a point where he/she will be able to create their own henka (variations) for use in real world self-defense situations. This is when the student stops imitating and begins to take on Usagi No Kage Ryu’s techniques as their own. A student has as long as they need to study the requirements, but they must be in grade for at least four (4) months before even being considered for grading. Kyu testing will be held on the 15th of each month. Belt testing fee is $50 and is non refundable in the event of failure or absence.
