Theatre Knights are a small [but growing!] self-funded theatre company based in Belfast. The group is the drama wing of Belfast's [in]famous Knights of the Round Table Arts Collective, which strives to bring together all of the different strands of artistic endeavour to form one big melting pot.
Theatre Knights are descended from 'Hippos In The Shower' royalty as when Geoff Gatt's psychedelic musical finished its run in 2005 many of the cast members were not ready to give up the limelight and decided that forming a theatre group would be a good idea. Their first play was 'The Singing Psychiatrist' - a musical comedy written by Knights founder Thomas L. Muinzer - which was performed in The OMAC and The Culturlann in Belfast.
Carrying on with the theme of staging new plays by new local writers the next challenge the Theatre Knights took on was 'In The Glasshouse' a play about the effects of Manic Depression on the sufferer and their friends and family. Written by Ruth Kennedy this play showed that the Knights could turn their hand to more serious acting roles.
Next was Jim Johnston's tour de force 'The Wooing of the She-Wolf' with its cast of thousands [possibly]. The Greek tragedy 'Antigone' was performed in September/October 2007 and was the first Knights' play to be taken outside of Belfast and performed in the city of Derry.
Coming up to the present day May 2008 saw the girls perform a four night run of 'Reservoir Cats' - an all-female version of Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' - in Belfast's Black Box.
Future plans for Theatre Knights include a restaging of Eve Ensler's 'Vagina Monologues' and taking 'Hippos In The Shower' to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2008!
