Hello my darlings! My name is Satine. Some of you may know me as "The Sparkling Diamond". I live in Paris, France with the love of my life Christian.
This is my story.
I was a courtesan. I sold my love to men. I made them believe what they wanted to believe. I still work at the Moulin Rouge, but I am only a dancer now. My boss is a very sweet man named Harold Zidler.
While working one night I was to seduce a Duke so that he would invest, what I ended up getting was a poor writer duped by Toulouse Lautrec. I couldn't help but fall in love with his charm, but I had to remember what
I was there to do. I couldn't break the biggest rule of all...so I told him that it was impossible for me to fall in love.
But he tried again. And it happened. So we started to see each other more and more. Once Zidler found out he was outraged, I told him it was a simple infatuation. But he said it must end.
We learned that the Duke was an insanely jealous man, and that if I didn't sleep with him he would pull his investment out. I had to make an important decision-my hopes of becoming an actress...or the love of my life.
I went the Duke and found a side in him, I never thought I'd see. Sobbing, I went to Christian and told him that I couldn't do it. I couldn't sleep with him. He said that we'd run away. That we'd leave forever. I went to get my things, elated at the thought that'd we'd be free together.
I ran into Harold who made his last attempts to get me to stay. I told him that Christian loves me, and that's worth more than anything someone would pay for me.
Then he dropped the bomb.
The Duke was to kill Christian.
I had to tell Christian it was over between us. That the Duke had given me an offer that I couldn't pass up. While he saw my calm, cool demeanor on the outside...I was falling apart on the inside.
While performing "Spectacular, Spectacular!" the play in which the Duke had invested. Christian came backstage and tried one last time to get me to tell him why I had to end us. I couldn't do it, all of the sudden the stage doors opened and there we were in front of everyone. He threw money down at my feet and said, "This woman is yours now. I've paid my whore." And walked away. All I could do, was sing our secret song and hope that he would come back and forgive me.
Slowly, he turned around and continued the verses to the song. I took a deep breath, surprised but relieved that he still loved me. We ended the show showing our love to everyone in that theatre.
Lately, I've had to stay in bed from time to time from illness. We're still not totally sure what's wrong, but it isn't anything too terrible.
Life is so wonderful right now!
