About Me

Derek Dreier was born in Boston, MA and raised in Iowa City, IA. He is a 2007 graduate of the Lawrence Conservatory of Music where he studied percussion with Dane Richeson and was an active member of the jazz ensembles and combos as well as the symphony orchestra and world percussion ensembles. He is currently pursuing a masters in music performance degree from Indiana University's Jacob School of Music where he also serves as an Associate Instructor in the percussion department. As a jazz musician Derek has shared the stage with Bobby Watson, Kenny Wheeler, Benny Golson, Wycliffe Gordon and Maria Schneider among others. Also while at Lawrence, Derek was a member of Lawrence University's Jazz Ensemble that won Downbeat Magazine's 2007 "Oustanding Performance Award". As a classical percussionist Derek has performed with Timpanist John Tafoya, Marimbist Kevin Bobo, and was principal percussionist of the Indiana University Philharmonic in the 2007-08 year which included two concerts under the baton of Maestro Leonard Slatkin.

Band Members: "Ah-Na" is an original of mine and was written in the Spring of 2007. It is representative of my experience of 10 days in Amsterdam fall of '06. Performance from Senior recital May 2007 and includes; Accordion-Lee Tomboulian, Flugelhorn-Adam Meckler, Soprano Sax-Ben Doherty, Bass-Nick Anderson, Drums-Derek Dreier"I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" is indicative of my love for traditional folk and country music. This particular arrangement was done by Jack Walrath from his "Master of Suspense" album and was transcribed by me. Performed on my junior recital May of 2006. Bass-Mark Urness, Piano-Lee Tomboulian, Trumpet-Adam Meckler, Voice-Emily Fink, Tenor Sax-Ben Doherty, Alto Sax-Jesse Dochnal, Trombone-James Hall."7.5"-Written by Bill Stewart. Performed by The Mark Urness Sextet, Spring of 2007. The Rapture Concert. Adam Meckler-Trumpet, Ben Doherty-Tenor Sax, James Hall-Trombone, Greg Woodard-Piano, Mark Urness-Bass, Derek Dreier-Drums"A La Par"-This is the 3rd movement from a 3 movement multiple percussion piece with piano accompaniment (check picture for set-up).
