"If They want us good, we'll be bad; if they want us happy, we'll play it sad; you got to scream; do a Ballyhoo; If you won't do it... we'll do it for you!" - The Ballyhoo Riot
The Ballyhoos (the band, not the name) were in Intense's and Nicotine's head for quite a while before they actually got together. Former drummer for The Sullens, George Beast III, had given away his drum set to Nick Nicotine. Mamma Iola, former bassist for Jekill Lovers, showned up at Nicotine's place and said that she wanted to play those drums. Two weeks later Johnny Intense, Nick Nicotine and Mamma Iola got together and started playin', havin' in mind all the records they had listenned from bands such as The Gories, Fireworks, Jacknife, Blacktop and all the R&B from 50's and 60's. With Mamma Iola on the drums, Intense on guitar and Nicotine on guitar and vocals, they've never felt the need for a bass player (which is comprehensible, since they were tryin' to emulate such rough sounds...).
The band's name appeared while lookin' in a dictionary: Ballyhoo - Screamed propaganda. That was it! Since all that Nick was doin' was to shout out loud, Intense was still learnin' to play the guitar and Iola never had played the drums before, the name fitted them like a glove. Two months later they played their first gig at St. Susana's Bar, in Aljezur. The show went well and they started thinkin' on recording the songs they had at the time. They knew that time was runnin' and they were afraid they would never sound so primitive again, so Telepathic was recorded at Hey, Pachuco's Studios, in two afternoons in July 2000.
The band is constantly recording at Hey, Pachuco's Studios.
