I can now officially add Teaching Artist to my profile!

About Me

I am a PERFORMER, WRITER, TEACHING ARTIST and motivational speaker and mother of one. I am a believer in God the Father and am not ashamed. I write ONE-WOMAN SHOWS depicting historical events and figures. I absolutely love researching and delving into a person's story and bringing it to life. I am an encourager by nature so I am always trying to uplift people and push them to reach their full potential. And, I am be releasing my first book UP FROM ROCK BOTTOM (check my blog for updates). With those qualities, I have established my company...BIG DOOR PRESENTATIONS LLC. Check out my website at www.bigdoorllc.com. You will see a few of the shows that I have been performing.WHAT'S BEHIND YOUR DOOR? Ask yourself that question. The 'door' you face may seem big and intimidating, but you must find courage to open it. Or, you'll never know what awaits you on the other side... What's on the other side of my door? Humanitarian work...life is not about bling (yes, that's nice), but it is about making a difference, leaving a mark in this world where God will be pleased.Other intersting things about me...I'm from Detroit, MI and graduated from Mumford HS. I then journeyed to the University of Kentucky. Oh, I spent a few years at Western MI Univ. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (oo-oop!) College, of course, gave me years of learning and living. I graduated with a BA in African-American Studies. I was not ready for the 'real world' so with a leap of faith I went to NY for acting school and have been in the business ever since. Never being afraid of a challenge, I have tried my hand in directing, acting, and sketch comedy. As you can see, I'm a mother and am enjoying it. My thing is living, laughing, and trying new things. I love a good joke...peanut M&M's in ice cream...working out (glutton for pain)...and a good DVD on a rainy night. My to-do list? Hot air balloon ride...half-marathon trail run (gotta watch the knees), and finding a quiet spot on the beach. My motto today...Life is too short to hold back! ..
I got this snazzy layout from whateverlife.com!

My Interests

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT ALICIA'S PERFORMANCES?............................................... ............................................................ ............................."One of the best one woman performances I've seen. Exceptional and very touching. She left you with a sense of rising above any and all obstacles..." S. Davis....................................................... ............................................................ ............"Outstanding educational and emotional presentation that touches the heart and challenges the mind. Brings to light in an unforgettable way...A must for modern day teens to see and hear..." J. Pruett...................................................... ............................................................ ............."Awesome performance! She kept us alert by using modern day issues to relate back in the day. Her storytelling ability was captivating!" T. Ivey........................................................ ............................................................ ................"Alicia performed with clarity and emotions that could take you as an individual down the story line of journeys traveled. Role playing of different situations perfected her performances." S. Jones....................................................... ............................................................ .................PERFORMING AND WRITING are the two creative things that I must do or I'd suffocate. Yeah, that's something to live for, right? But, my purpose on earth is to inspire you to realize your purpose and that no matter what your past says about you, God can use you for greatness. The other interests? Excercising, teaching my daughter to never give up. Trying new things - and no that is not corny or cliche'! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, trying to live life to make a difference...to motivate, encourage, or free someone else...that's why I write and perform!

I'd like to meet:

style="width:426px;height:320px" data="http://widget-91.slide.com/widgets/slideticker.swf"> ; .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..> .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..>

I am a storyteller by nature. So, I'd love to meet people from different backgrounds and listen to the triumphant stories of survival and the human spirit. From the present...I'd like to meet the Lost Boys of Sudan and learn about how they survived through their adversities. I'd like to hear the testimonies of Rwandan refugees. And people who are making a difference...Don Cheadle, Oprah...and the unsung hero's changing lives in Dafur and other devastating areas in this world. From the past...I'd like to travel back in time to talk with Margaret Garner and grasp her passion for freedom and her children. I'd love to ask Harriet Tubman "what made her risk her life so many times to save others?" I'd love to meet some Civil Rights leaders and ask them if their marching and beatings for our rights were in vain. No, I'm not really that deep...I'm just in one of those moods...Oh, and if you have a direct contact for Chris Gardner,Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey, Donnie McClurkin, T D Jakes, or Joel Osteen...yes, I'd like to meet them. I'd like to meet YOU. I'd like to meet the downtrodden who feel like giving up to encourage them that God has a purpose for them...even in their mess, they can be used.

Music:

I love music and melodies. In my CD player is Robin Thicke, India A., Badu, Jill Scott, Eric B and Rakim (the Best of-even have my daughter rhyming to "Paid In Full", an Ol' hip-hop compilation, Donnie McClurkin, WOW Gospel, T D Jakes...I have to say that I constantly pull out my oldies because that music is what legacies and stories are built on...R&B, gospel, blues, Christian, reggae, hip-hop, i.e. ol'skool or conscious thought, house, jazz, world music...

Movies:

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..> .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..>

My favorites are: Love Jones, Five Heartbeats, Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Wiz. However, I am a karate flick chick...I love movies like Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, etc. And, I round my faves off with foreign films and Independent films as well...their titles are too many to name.

Television:

The Wire...The Office...Monk...The Closer...I was into Lost, but it lost me (too many cliffhangers). And, whatever else my girl, Tracee convinces me is good...she's a professional TV analyst.

Books:

I don't just own a Bible, I read it as well. I love my forthcoming book, UP FROM ROCK BOTTOM. I am big on auto-biographies. I've got to read about Gordon Parks. I've enjoyed a variety of books such as Manchild in the Promised Land (Claude Brown), Invisible Man, Zora Neal Hurston's - Their Eyes Were Watching God, Think and Grow Rich, Memoirs of a Geisha...Poetry - Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni to name a few.

Heroes:

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..Jesus made a difference for many people. He inspired, encouraged, sacrificed and redeemed. My Granny...any mother who can experience life the way she has and still find laughter is amazing to me. Folks who have hit rock bottom and found their purpose in life without bitterness, blame and excuses is a hero. People who use their status to change lives...Don Cheadle, Oprah, Tyler Perry AND so many unsung hero's who go out of their comfort zone and try to make a change for justice.
